Preview: Switzerland vs Spain

Experience the unpredictable magic of the UEFA European Championship quarter-finals as spirited underdogs Switzerland, fresh off their stunning victory over France, take on a rejuvenated Spain side that orchestrated an eight-goal thriller against Croatia.

Switzerland

Spirited underdogs, Switzerland completed a stunning comeback to eliminate fan favourites, France from the tournament after a game decided by penalties. Onlookers had counted out the Red Crosses, especially after the Blues took a commanding 3-1 lead with just fifteen minutes left on the clock.

The comfortable two-goal margin was secured with a brace from Karim Benzema (57’ & 59’), and a stunning 25-yard goal by Paul Pogba (75’). However, a fantastic header from Haris Seferovic (15’ & 81’) and a brilliant effort in stoppage time by Mario Gavranovic (90’+ET) pushed the game into extra-time.

Everything seemed to be going France's way until Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer's crucial save put an end to their tournament run. The 32-year-old paused to ensure the decisive moment was confirmed, and once the officials nodded, the Red Crosses erupted in celebration.

Yann Sommer, Borussia Mönchengladbach's hero, led the celebrations while Kylian Mbappe stood by, reflecting on the result. Coach Vladimir Petković will aim for a repeat performance on Friday when his team returns with the famous 3—4—1—2 formation.

Seferovic has been in excellent form, netting 3 goals in 4 matches, and will once again partner with Breel Embolo in attack. The Red Crosses remain unbeaten in their last six appearances, showcasing a strong record of WWDLWD.

Spain

Spain defeated Croatia after extra-time in Monday’s eight-goal thriller at Parken Stadium. La Roja were on the front foot right after kick-off, but a wayward back-pass by Pedri (20’ O.G.) aimed at goalkeeper Unai Simon found its way into goal, handing the Blazers an undeserved lead.

Minutes later, Pablo Sarabia (38') tucked in a rebound to level the score-line. Then, goals from César Azpilicueta (57’) and Ferran Torres (77’) saw Spain establish a comfortable two-goal lead.

However, the game took a dramatic turn when Mislav Orsic (85') cut the Spanish lead down to one. Five minutes later, a fantastic glancing header in stoppage-time by second-half substitute Mario Pasalic (90’+ET) sent the game into extra-time.

Ten minutes into extra-time, a moment of quality from Alvaro Morata (100’) restored the lead for the Red Fury, before Mikel Oiarzabal (103’) put the game to bed three minutes later. A passionate Luis Enrique was seen celebrating at the touch-line, relieved after almost facing criticism for giving up a two-goal lead.

After a slow start, which saw Spain score only a goal in the first two games, they improved in the last two, scoring a total of ten goals. This change coincided with the return of Sergio Busquets on Match Day 3.

Luis Enrique will have the experienced captain covering every blade of grass on the pitch once again on Friday in the 4—3—3 formation prevalent throughout the tournament. Alvaro Morata as centre-forward, flanked by Ferran Torres on the right and Pablo Sarabia on the left, could feature again in attack for this fixture.

The Red Fury remains unbeaten in six games across all competitions: WDDDWW.
