Steve Clarke eager to see Scotland bounce back against Switzerland.

After a crushing defeat to Germany, Scotland look to redeem themselves against a buoyant Switzerland, who aim for their first-ever consecutive wins at the start of a major tournament, in an intriguing Euro 2024 clash at the RheinEnergieStadion.

Scotland

Scotland recorded their second-heaviest defeat at a major tournament, as they were heavily beaten 5-1 by hosts Germany in their Euro 2024 opener. Fabulous finishes from Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala left the Tartan Army trailing before things went from bad to worse after Ryan Porteous was shown a red card for an acrimonious tackle in the box.

Additional goals by Kai Havertz, from the penalty spot, along with those from substitutes Niclas Füllkrug and Emre Can, wrapped up the game. An own goal from Antonio Rüdiger made the scoreline a little less embarrassing for Scotland.

“We got a lot of things wrong, and we've got to put it right in the next game,” Scotland head coach Steve Clarke said after the loss to Germany. The result leaves Scotland at the bottom of Group A as they head into Match Day 2, where they will face Switzerland in the second meeting between both sides at a major tournament.

A 3—4—2—1 formation with Che Adams in attack was seen in the opening day defeat, and it remains to be seen if the Scots will stick to this familiar setup against Switzerland. Porteous is the only absentee, as he is suspended after his red card last time out.

Switzerland

Switzerland got their Euro 2024 campaign off to a fine start with a 3-1 victory over Hungary. Kwadwo Duah opened his account for the Swiss in just his second appearance for the national team, before Michel Aebischer extended the lead just before the break.

Barnabás Varga halved the deficit in the second half, but substitute Breel Embolo sealed the win in stoppage time. The Red Crosses are currently 2nd in Group A, trailing Germany due to an inferior goal difference.

Switzerland will hope to win their first two opening matches in a major tournament for the first time ever when they take to the pitch on Wednesday. The Swiss have a strong record in the opening round of major tournaments, having lost just two of 14 matches while winning seven times and drawing five.

"It was important that we won our first game, but I wasn’t so happy with the second half. We have to play better in the next game," head coach Murat Yakin remarked, urging his side to improve against Scotland. Duah is expected to spearhead the attack in a mirrored 3-4-2-1 formation.
