Euro 2024: Switzerland eyeing last sixteen as Germany clash looms.

As Switzerland aims to dethrone the host nation and Group A leaders Germany at the Deutsche Bank Park, an intense and decisive clash looms on Sunday evening, with the Red Crosses seeking both group supremacy and a place in the last sixteen.

Switzerland

Switzerland will be looking to join Germany in the last sixteen by defeating the host nation on Sunday. Last time out, the Red Crosses picked up a 1-1 draw with Scotland, securing 2nd place with four points [1W, 1D, 0L], just two points behind Germany, who top Group A.

Murat Yakin’s side will face Germany in a major tournament for the first time since the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Extending a three-game unbeaten streak against Germany will certainly be one of their objectives this weekend.

[It will be] a very difficult game with a very good team and good individual players. They started really well,’ Ricardo Rodriguez remarked. ‘But it’s a game, and we can do it, too. We can beat them. It won’t be easy; it will be a very intense game. They are definitely the favourites, but we’ll do everything we can to get the win,’ he added.

Victory on Sunday will see Switzerland replace Germany at the top of Group A as group winners. Xherdan Shaqiri, whose sensational goal earned the Red Crosses a draw against Scotland, is expected to lead the attack once again when Yakin implements the 3—4—2—1 formation.

Germany

Germany became the first country to reach the round of sixteen after a 2-0 win over Hungary. İlkay Gündoğan, who walked away with the MVP award, created the opener for Jamal Musiala before getting one for himself seven minutes after the hour mark.

After back-to-back victories, Germany are now looking to become the third host nation to win all three opening games at the European Championship after the Netherlands in 2000 and France in 1984. "Today's training was just lining up in the way we want to play against Switzerland. Tomorrow, we'll do a little bit more, and the day after, it's matchday already. And then we'll win," Deniz Undav comically said in a pre-match press conference.

With a spot in the last sixteen already sealed, Julian Nagelsmann is expected to rest a handful of key players. Niclas Füllkrug could replace Kai Havertz in attack, while Leroy Sané might get in from the start on the right in what could be a reshuffled midfield trio.
