Euro 2024: Host nation Germany takes on Hungary after 5-1 opening win.

Host nation Germany aims for a second consecutive Euro 2024 victory as they face Hungary, hoping to replicate past successes and maintain their strong start following a dominant win over Scotland.

Germany

Host nation Germany will continue their European championship campaign after a flying start that saw them pick up a 5-1 win over Scotland. With 65,000 fans present at Allianz Arena, Die Mannschaft wasted no time in asserting their dominance over the Scots.

Florian Wirtz showed why he was awarded Bundesliga Player of the Season, scoring a well-taken goal in just ten minutes. Jamal Musiala, who eventually was named the game’s MVP, doubled the lead before setting up another goal.

A stoppage-time goal from Emre Can wrapped up the win, leaving Germany at the top of Group A with three points and a goal difference of +4. They will look to win their second game when they take on Hungary, whom they have only defeated once on home soil in their last six encounters.

Victory on Wednesday would see Germany win their opening two games on European soil for the fifth time, a feat that often bodes well, having won the tournament three times thereafter. In their 5-1 victory over Scotland, Germany lined up in a 4—2—3—1 formation, with Kai Havertz leading the attack.

A similar formation is expected for the fixture against Hungary, as Germany seeks to continue their winning momentum.

Hungary

Hungary, currently third in Group A with a goal difference of -2, are eager to earn their first point after a 3-1 loss to Switzerland on the opening day. Barnabás Varga managed to reduce Hungary’s deficit to one after the Magyars conceded twice in the first half. However, a stoppage-time goal from Switzerland’s Breel Embolo ensured the game remained out of reach.

"It wasn’t easy, as we were behind. We switched to a two-striker formation, which we haven't played before, so it was surprising, but we didn't have any other option," said striker Martin Ádám following the defeat.

On Wednesday, Hungary faces a much more difficult test as they prepare to face host nation Germany. Marco Rossi’s side, who are without a win in their last seven European Championship games, will aim to pick up successive victories over Die Mannschaft, employing a 3—4—2—1 formation with Barnabás Varga leading the attack once again. "We beat them in 2022, so I’m sure it will be an extra motivation for them," Ádám added.
