Euro 2024: Host nation Germany in round-of-16 clash against Denmark.

The stage is set for a thrilling Euro 2024 round-of-16 encounter as host nation Germany faces off against Denmark, with both teams eager to break historical precedents and advance further into the tournament.

Germany

Germany secured their place in the knockout stage as Group A winners after picking up seven points from three matches. The host nation were on the verge of losing their last group match against Switzerland before super-sub Niclas Füllkrug came to the rescue with a stoppage-time header [90’+2] for a 1-1 draw.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side will take on Denmark in the round-of-16 on Saturday, hoping to avoid back-to-back exits in the knockout stage. Die Mannschaft are making their fifth consecutive appearance in the round-of-16.

This will be the fifth meeting between these countries at a major tournament, with both sides having won twice in their previous four encounters. However, the only meeting between them at the European Championship knockout stage was in 1992, when Germany suffered a 2-0 defeat.

Having alluded to Denmark's threats, the host nation will surely tread a careful path. ‘Physically tough and strong in the air, it's hard to create chances against them,’ sporting director Rudi Völler said, cautioning his side. ‘But they sometimes struggle to score themselves,’ he added.

A 4—2—3—1 formation with Kai Havertz in attack is expected. Niclas Füllkrug will be in contention for a start, having scored twice off the bench. Meanwhile, Jonathan Tah, who has caught the attention of Bayern Munich following his exploits at the Euros, is suspended.

Nico Schlotterbeck is expected to partner Antonio Rüdiger at the heart of defence, though Rüdiger remains in doubt with a thigh injury.

Denmark

Denmark have now reached the knockout stages of the European Championship in consecutive editions for the first time in the country’s history, despite failing to win a single match in the group stage. Nevertheless, they finished second in Group C with three points from three draws.

The Danish Dynamite will take on host nation Germany, hoping to reach the quarterfinals, having done so in Euro 2020 before a defeat to England sent them crashing out of the tournament. However, Denmark have lost all five of their previous matches against host nations at the European Championship, including one against Germany in 1988.

Kasper Hjulmand is expected to retain the 3—4—1—2 formation, featuring Rasmus Højlund and Jonas Wind in attack. Hjulmand will be without midfielder Morten Hjulmand, who is suspended.
