Denmark goes head-to-head with Serbia for place in last sixteen.
As Denmark and Serbia gear up for a thrilling showdown at the Allianz Arena on June 25, both teams are eager to secure a last sixteen spot in Euro 2024, with Denmark aiming to break their winless streak and Serbia determined to climb from the bottom of Group C.
Denmark
Denmark will be looking to reach the last sixteen at Euro 2024 with a win over Serbia on Tuesday. The Danes are yet to win a match in this tournament, having picked up consecutive 1-1 draws in their opening two games. This has left them level on two points with Slovenia in Group C.
In their last match against England, the Danish Dynamite went behind after Harry Kane tapped in from close range in the 18th minute. However, Morten Hjulmand equalised with a long-range strike in the 34th minute, marking his first international goal. "I wouldn't say I'm disappointed, but it's a shame; we could have achieved a better result," Denmark's coach Kasper Hjulmand commented.
The Danes will be meeting Serbia in a major tournament for the first time since Serbia regained independence in 2006. The Danish Dynamite have won all three meetings between the sides since 2006, scoring eight goals and conceding just one. Their only major tournament clash was at Euro 1984, when Serbia was part of Yugoslavia, with Denmark claiming a 5-0 victory.
Denmark are unbeaten in their last six matches across all competitions heading into this fixture. A victory on Tuesday will see the Danish team progress to the last sixteen, irrespective of any other results. Rasmus Højlund and Jonas Wind, both yet to find the net in this tournament, are expected to lead the attack again in a 3-4-1-2 formation.
Serbia
Serbia have threatened to pull out of the ongoing Euro 2024 tournament if Albania and Croatia are not punished for offensive chants in their meetings.
The Eagles were on the verge of losing to Slovenia on Match Day 2 after a Žan Karničnik goal in the 69th minute. However, Luka Jović scored in stoppage-time to earn them a 1-1 draw.
It was Serbia's first point at the tournament after losing to England in the opening match, leaving them at the bottom of Group C. However, they can still reach the last sixteen if they win against Denmark and Slovenia fails to defeat England.
“There is no going back, and we can only go forward. If you want to move forward, you have to win,” Serbia's coach Dragan Stojković said in a press conference.
Jović could come into the starting XI after his heroics, although Aleksandar Mitrović is expected to lead the attack in Stojković’s 3—4—2—1 formation.
