Euro 2024: England eying successive finals as Netherlands clash looms.

As the Netherlands aim to break their semi-final hoodoo and move closer to a European Championship title, they clash with England, who seek redemption and a second consecutive final appearance, in a historic encounter at Signal Iduna Park.

Netherlands

The Netherlands needed a break to secure their quarterfinal victory against Turkey. They managed a 2-1 win, aided by an own goal from Mert Müldür in the 76th minute. Earlier, Stefan de Vrij had equalized with a powerful header in the 70th minute.

While Turkish captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu was left in tears, the Netherlands celebrated their first semi-final qualification at the European Championship in two decades. On Wednesday, they've set their sights on moving closer to a second European Championship title, an honor they last achieved in 1988.

Manager Ronald Koeman remarked, "It will be a great night on Wednesday between two big nations – a historic night." He expressed a preference for facing Spain in the final but emphasized the importance of preparing well for the semi-final against England.

This match marks Oranje's fourth meeting with England in a major tournament. Historically, the Netherlands has been eliminated from four out of five semi-final fixtures at the European Championship. They are expected to field a 4—2—3—1 formation with Memphis Depay leading the attack.

England

Just like the Netherlands, England needed a get-out-of-jail card in the quarterfinal clash against Switzerland. Luckily, they found one through a remarkable left-footed effort by Saka in the 80th minute for a 1-1 draw, before going on to win 5-3 on penalties.

Putting the Netherlands, whose confidence has gradually increased over the course of the tournament, aside will be Gareth Southgate’s next task. However, a torrid record against the Flying Dutchmen wouldn't inspire much confidence, as England have won only one of their last nine encounters against the Netherlands (1 win, 4 draws, 4 losses).

This is England's fourth appearance in the semi-final of the UEFA European Championship. Having lost twice before reaching the final in the previous edition of the tournament, the Three Lions will be looking to pick up a win and reach successive European finals.

A 3-4-2-1 formation with Harry Kane in attack is expected, with Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham likely to be deployed in support behind England’s record goal scorer. Kobbie Mainoo is expected to keep his place in the midfield after a stellar performance against Switzerland, and Marc Guéhi is poised to return to the starting line-up after his suspension in the quarterfinal clash.
