The Netherlands take on Austria in final Day battle for last 16.

The Netherlands and Austria are set to clash in a high-stakes encounter at the Olympiastadion Berlin, where both teams aim to secure a spot in the Euro 2024 knockout stage amidst a backdrop of controversial calls, historical records, and tactical battles.

Netherlands

The Netherlands, currently on a form of [LWWWD], are coming off a goalless draw against France. The match saw Xavi Simons' goal controversially disallowed after VAR determined that Denzel Dumfries impeded France goalkeeper Mike Maignan from an offside position.

This result keeps the Netherlands at the top of Group D, having scored more goals despite being level on 4 points and a goal difference of +1 with France. Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman acknowledged the offside position of Dumfries but stated, “But he is not disturbing the goalkeeper, and when that is not happening, it is a legal goal, in my opinion.”

The Flying Dutchmen will aim to reach the knockout stage at the Euros for the eighth time in their last nine appearances, having only missed out in 2012. Koeman's men will advance to the round of 16 as one of the top two in Group D if they avoid defeat against Austria.

A victory will see the Netherlands extend their winning run against Austria, having previously triumphed over them at the 1978 World Cup and Euro 2000. “We all know that the Austria game will be difficult for many reasons. The intensity is going to be high,” said skipper Virgil van Dijk.

A 4—2—3—1 formation, as seen against France, is expected, with Memphis Depay—who has 45 goals and is five away from matching the Dutch record scorer Robin van Persie's 50 goals—spearheading the attack.

Austria

Austria picked up their first set of points at Euro 2024 with a 3-1 victory over Poland. This win ended a run of two games without a win across all competitions [WWDLW].

Ralf Rangnick's men took an early lead courtesy of a fabulous near-post header from Gernot Trauner [9']. Despite losing the lead moments later to a Krzysztof Piątek strike [30'], goals from Christoph Baumgartner [66'] and Marko Arnautović [78’ P.] secured the win for Austria.

"We're all very happy because we put a lot into this game," Arnautović said. "We deserved to win," he added.

The result leaves Rangnick's side third in Group D with three points [1W, 0D, 1L]. A win will surely propel them to join teams like Germany and Spain in the round of 16.

However, Austria have lost their last seven games against the Netherlands. Rangnick is expected to stick with the familiar 4-2-3-1 formation, with Arnautović leading in attack.
