Poland face Austria in attempt to rekindle Euro 2024 campaign.
With both teams eager to avoid elimination in Group D, Poland and Austria clash in a high-stakes encounter at the Olympiastadion Berlin, with Robert Lewandowski's anticipated return adding extra intrigue.
Poland
Poland [WDWWL] are coming into this game following a narrow 2-1 loss to the Netherlands in their opening Group D match. Adam Buksa [16’], deputising for the injured Robert Lewandowski, opened the scoring for Poland with a header off a corner.
However, Cody Gakpo's deflected strike [29’] restored parity for the Netherlands, leaving the game level at the break. Just when it looked like Michał Probierz’s side were going to earn a point, substitute Wout Weghorst stepped up to score the winner for the Dutch.
The result leaves Poland as third in Group D, with a GD of -1, while heading into Match Day 2. This will be the second meeting between both sides at a major tournament.
Poland and Austria’s only meeting in the European Championship was in the group stage of Euro 2008, which ended in a 1-1 draw, both teams’ only point in the competition that year. The Eagles have never lost consecutive games within the same edition of the UEFA European Championship.
They will be hoping not to do so when they take on Austria, knowing that a defeat could spell the end of their European campaign. Robert Lewandowski, Poland's all-time leading goal scorer, is expected to return to action for Friday’s crunch match against Austria, having sat out the opening game against the Netherlands due to a thigh injury.
The 35-year-old is expected to replace Kacper Urbański in the spot next to Adam Buksa when Probierz lays out the 3—5—2.
Austria
Austria began their Euro 2024 campaign with a 1-0 loss against France, which leaves them bottom of Group D with no points and a goal difference of -1, having failed to score for the first time in 18 games. An own goal from Maximilian Wöber in the first half was all it took to end Austria’s seven-game unbeaten run [WWWDL].
“Well, it's obvious that we are disappointed with this result. In 100 minutes we didn't concede one goal from France, the only goal was a very unfortunate own goal,” Ralf Rangnick told reporters. “There's no reproach at all towards Maxi Wöber,” he added.
Austria heads into match day 2’s clash with Poland, hoping to secure maximum points. However, Rangnick’s side are winless in their last five games against Poland [0W, 2D, & 3L], all in competitive matches between 2004 and 2019.
A 4-2-3-1 formation, as seen against France, is expected, with Michael Gregoritsch in attack.
