Preview: Italy vs Switzerland
On Wednesday, Italy will aim to continue their dazzling form from a dominant win over Turkey as they face Switzerland, who are eager to improve following a hard-fought draw with Wales, in a captivating UEFA Euro 2020 Group A clash at Stadio Olimpico.
Italy
Italy got off to a flying start at Euro 2020 with a comfortable 3-0 win over Turkey in the tournament's opening game. The Crescent-Stars frustrated the Italians initially, keeping them at bay despite Italy's dominance in the first half.
However, the Italians broke the deadlock after the interval, scoring three goals in less than half an hour. Merih Demiral inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while trying to block Domenico Berardi's cross. Lazio's Ciro Immobile then doubled the lead by tucking in a rebound from Leonardo Spinazzola's shot.
Turkey's goalkeeper, Ugurcan Cakir, contributed to Italy’s third goal with a poor goal kick that landed at Berardi's feet. The Sassuolo player set up Nicolò Barella, who then found Immobile. The Lazio forward assisted Lorenzo Insigne for Italy’s third goal.
"We played well," said an impressed Roberto Mancini in his post-match interview. "It wasn't easy, and we were against a good team," he added. Mancini sees no reason to change his effective 4-3-3 formation for the upcoming match, likely sticking with Berardi, Immobile, and Insigne in attack.
Italy sits at the top of Group A with 3 points and a goal difference of +3, having started with one win and no draws or losses.
Switzerland
Switzerland kicked off their European campaign with a draw against Wales on Saturday in the game played at Baku Olympic Stadium. Borussia Moenchengladbach forward, Breel Embolo (49') was denied by Welsh goalkeeper, Leicester City's Danny Ward a moment before connecting to Shaqiri's cross with a fantastic header to establish a Switzerland lead.
However, Cardiff City's Kieffer Moore (74') emerged from nowhere to put a glancing header beyond the reach of Switzerland's goalkeeper, Yann Sommer, as he leveled the score-line. Breel Embolo came close to scoring his second goal in the same fashion, but Danny Ward denied the 24-year-old the brace after a remarkable save to keep the score-line at 1-1.
"We have known from the start it's an embattled group," Vladimir Petkovic said in his post-match interview. "Italy are the clear favourite; we know we have to improve in the next two matches," he added, referring to their fixture against the Azzurri.
A 3—4—1—2 formation may be adopted once again by Petkovic on Wednesday. Switzerland have one point after 0W, 1D, & 0L.
