Schalke plotting near-impossible escape from certain relegation.
Leipzig aim to cap a successful season with a fifth straight victory and secure Champions League football, while Schalke fight for a dramatic escape from relegation in the final Bundesliga matchday.
RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig picked up a 3-1 win over Bayern Munich last weekend at the Allianz Arena to tighten their grip on third place. The victory guaranteed Leipzig a place in the upcoming edition of the UEFA Champions League, having become mathematically certain to finish in the top four along with Bayern and Dortmund.
The Red Bulls have now secured Champions League qualification for the sixth time and in five successive seasons. Having won four consecutive Bundesliga games for the first time in 2023, Leipzig [LWWWW] have 63 points after 19W, 6D, and 8L.
They have already picked up five more points than they managed to across the whole of last season (58 points) and are looking to add to the tally. A win in the DFB Cup final against Frankfurt on June 3 would be considered the jewel in the crown, speaking of Leipzig's campaign.
The Red Bulls could appear with a 4-2-3-1 formation, featuring Timo Werner in attack for this clash against FC S04. Marco Rose will be without goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi for the final game of the season following an ACL injury.
The 33-year-old was, however, back on the pitch for a light training session on Tuesday before completing a number of goalkeeping drills as part of his recovery process.
Schalke 04
FC Schalke, currently in 17th place, have secured 31 points from 7 wins, 10 draws, and 16 losses. Last weekend's draw with Frankfurt left them just one point shy of safety.
Die Königsblauen are planning a dramatic last-day escape from the relegation zone. However, they have managed only five wins in their last 12 Bundesliga matches.
Schalke will avoid certain relegation if they win and both Stuttgart and Bochum fail to win. They can also escape automatic relegation if they draw, Bochum lose to Leverkusen, and Stuttgart lose to Hoffenheim by an unrealistic 22 or 23-goal margin.
Schalke have a poor record against RB Leipzig, with seven losses from 11 Bundesliga encounters. They are on the brink of their fifth relegation from the Bundesliga, having previously faced the drop in 1981, 1983, 1987, and 2021.
Thomas Reis is likely to field a 4-2-3-1 formation with Sebastian Polter in attack. However, both Moritz Jenz and Simon Terodde are suspended for the final game due to yellow card accumulations.
