Bayern take on Schalke, hoping to remain atop Bundesliga table after weekend.

As Bayern Munich aims to solidify their lead atop the Bundesliga table, they face a resurgent Schalke 04, keen on continuing their climb away from relegation trouble after back-to-back victories.

FC Bayern München

Two goals in the second half from Serge Gnabry (62') and Leroy Sane (73') were enough for Bayern Munich to secure a 2-1 win over Werder Bremen, whose goal came from Niklas Schmidt (87') at the Weserstadion. The victory leaves Bayern Munich with back-to-back wins and at the top of the table, one point clear of second-placed Dortmund (64 points). Bayern have 65 points (19W, 8D, & 4L) going into the weekend for Saturday’s clash against Schalke and are hoping to see the gap grow to four points before Dortmund's home game against Gladbach later in the day.

Bayern will certainly be brimming with confidence on Saturday, knowing they have lost just one of their last 21 games against promoted sides such as Schalke (17W, 3D, 1L). Furthermore, Bayern have lost just one of their 31 top-flight home games against such sides (28W, 2D, 1L), a 4-1 loss to Stuttgart in May 2018. A 4-2-3-1 formation with Serge Gnabry in attack is expected from Thomas Tuchel against FC Schalke 04 on Saturday.

Former Schalke player Leon Goretzka (2013-2018) is poised to return after serving a suspension against Die Werderaner last weekend. The 28-year-old is expected to force Ryan Gravenberch back to the bench. Meanwhile, Mane could be up for a spot in the attacking trio behind Gnabry, along with Kingsley Coman and Jamal Musiala, but faces stiff competition from Thomas Müller.

Alphonso Davies (thigh), Hernandez (knee), and Manuel Neuer (broken leg) are all ruled out, while Choupo-Moting (knee) and Upamecano (muscle tear) could play a part in the weekend’s game.

Schalke 04

Schalke moved two spots up the table from 17th to 15th place following a 3-2 win over Mainz last weekend. It was the first time the Royal Blues exited the bottom three since Match Day 8.

Schalke now have 30 points from 7 wins, 9 draws, and 15 losses after back-to-back victories. They are looking to make it three wins in a row, having recorded a recent form of LWLWW.

Die Königsblauen have conceded 59 goals so far this season but will be looking to keep Bayern out despite the psychological trauma of suffering an embarrassing eight-goal defeat in their last visit to Bayern Munich. It was their joint-heaviest top-flight loss, behind an 11-0 thrashing at the hands of Borussia Mönchengladbach in January 1967.

Thomas Reis could choose a 5-4-1 formation with Michael Frey in attack for this clash against Bayern Munich on Saturday.
