FC Koln seeking end to three-game winless run in Freiburg clash.

Relegation-threatened FC Koln look to revitalize their survival hopes against a leaky Freiburg defense this Saturday at RheinEnergieStadion.

FC Köln

Relegation-threatened FC Koln are coming into this game after a hard-fought 1-1 draw with FSV Mainz last weekend at the MEWA Arena. Leandro Barreiro had put Mainz ahead just before the half-hour mark, but club captain Florian Kainz restored parity from the spot for Koln deep inside stoppage time.

With 23 points (4W, 11D, & 16L), the Billy Goats are in 17th place on the Bundesliga table, five points adrift of 16th-placed Mainz 05, who occupy the relegation playoff spot. Steffen Baumgart’s men are on a three-game winless run (DWLLD), and they welcome Freiburg this Saturday, hoping to get back to winning ways.

Despite a not-so-impressive home record, having won just one of their last 11 league games (1W, 5D, & 5L), the hosts will be looking to turn things around as they aim to keep their survival hopes alive with three games left to play. Koln would fancy their chances against a leaky Freiburg defense that has let in a whopping 55 goals in the league this season.

Baumgart could use a 4-4-2 formation, with Sargis Adamyan and Luca Waldschmidt in attack. Davie Selke and Luca Kilian are both ruled out.

SC Freiburg

Freiburg are coming into this game off a disappointing 2-1 defeat to VfL Wolfsburg on home soil. Freiburg had taken the lead late in the first half from a Sebastiaan Bornauw own goal [41’ O.G.]. However, late goals from Maximilian Arnold [82’] and Maxence Lacroix [90’] flipped the game on its head.

Despite the loss, the visitors maintained seventh position on the Bundesliga table with 40 points [11W, 7D, & 13L], five points adrift of sixth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. Freiburg are winless in their last two league games [WLWDL] and will be looking to get back to winning ways as they prepare for Saturday’s trip.

The visitors have an impressive head-to-head record against the hosts, with 22 wins against Koln, only second to the 23 victories recorded against FC Schalke 04 in professional football. Furthermore, they have enjoyed more success against Koln under current manager Christian Streich, winning 12 out of 17 matches, more than they have against any other team during this period.

Streich’s men will be looking to continue their recent fine away record, having won their last three league games on the road. They will be hoping these impressive numbers count as they push to finish in European places with a few games left to go.

Streich is expected to keep the familiar 3-4-2-1 formation, with Michael Gregoritsch leading the attack. Nicolas Höfler and Kiliann Sildillia are both suspended for Saturday’s trip.
