Brest face relegation-threatened Metz, eager to extend unbeaten home run.
Brest, riding high on their unbeaten home streak, are set to clash with relegation-battling Metz this Sunday, aiming to solidify their place in the top three while fending off recent history.
Brest
Brest held on to 2nd place after earning a hard-fought 1-0 win over Lorient last time out, courtesy of an 86th-minute goal from Romain Del Castillo. The Pirates, who have three wins in their last five matches (WWLDW), are now on 50 points (14W, 8D, & 5L) heading into the weekend’s game against Metz.
Brest are one point ahead of fourth-placed Monaco (49 points) and third-placed Lille (49 points) following the latter’s 3-1 win over Marseille on Friday. Hence, any slip-up could see them lose their place.
Manager Eric Roy hopes his side can extend their fine run on home soil this weekend. The Pirates have not lost any of their last eight home games in Ligue 1 (5W, 3D, 0L), conceding just two goals across this run while keeping six clean sheets.
Brest's impressive defensive record has been the catalyst for their brilliant showing this season. Roy's side have conceded the fewest goals in the top five European leagues (6) since December, with no team keeping more clean sheets than them over this period (10).
However, they head into Sunday's game looking to avoid three consecutive defeats against Metz, having lost the previous two. A 4-2-3-1 formation with Martin Satriano in attack is expected against Metz.
Regarding availability, Jordan Amavi is absent with a calf injury, while Bilal Brahimi is suspended after receiving a late red card (R. 90'+6) against Lorient.
Metz
Relegation-threatened Metz remained in the bottom two after a 5-2 defeat to Monaco last time out. The Maroons conceded four goals before Papa Amadou Diallo (78') and Ibou Sané (84') reduced the deficit. However, they conceded a fifth, leaving any hopes of a comeback snuffed out.
It was the second loss in a row for Metz (LWWLL), who are in 17th place with 23 points (6W, 5D, 16L), three points shy of the relegation playoff spot going into the weekend’s clash. Metz have the second-worst attack in Ligue 1, having scored only 25 goals in 27 games.
However, four wins in their last six away matches at Brest in all competitions (4W, 1D, 1L) could hand them the much-needed confidence ahead of this fixture. A 4-5-1 formation with Georges Mikautadze in attack was lined up in the defeat to Monaco and is expected against Brest on Sunday.
Maxime Colin, Didier Lamkel Zé, and Kévin N'Doram are all sidelined for Metz with varying degrees of injuries. László Bölöni could also be without Christophe Hérelle.
