Lille back in race for top-three finish after midweek Monaco defeat.
FC Metz look to continue their escape from relegation as they host fourth-place LOSC Lille in a crucial Ligue 1 clash at Stade Saint-Symphorien this Sunday.
Metz
FC Metz are coming into this match after a crucial 1-0 win over Le Havre at the Stade Océane in last weekend’s relegation-survival battle. A goal from Georges Mikautadze right after the break was enough to secure the maximum point for the Maroons.
The win saw them leapfrog fellow newcomers Le Havre as they moved out of the relegation zone. László Bölöni’s side, who have now won back-to-back league games, will be looking to make it three wins in a row for the first time this season.
With 29 points, Metz sit in 15th place, three points above the bottom two ahead of Sunday’s game. The Maroons have scored in eight of their last nine games in the league, amassing a total of 11 goals during this period.
They will be looking to draw inspiration from their recent exploits in the final third as they welcome LOSC Lille for the weekend’s game. László Bölöni could deploy a 4-5-1 formation with weekend hero Georges Mikautadze in attack.
Meanwhile, Joel Asoro and Benjamin Tetteh will not be available for the game.
LOSC Lille
LOSC Lille are coming into this game after the midweek 1-0 loss to Monaco at the Stade Louis II. ‘’We started the match well; we would have deserved the advantage at halftime,'' Paulo Fonseca said following the loss. ''But against teams like Monaco, we have to know how to finish; when they scored, we knew how to stay in our game. I noticed a lot of technical errors,'' he added.
Despite the loss, Les Dogues remained in fourth place on the Ligue 1 table with 52 points [14W, 10D, & 6L], one point adrift of 3rd-placed Brest. They will be looking to avoid back-to-back defeats [DWWWL] when they make Sunday’s trip to Metz.
With 43 goals after 30 Ligue 1 games [1.43 G/G], Lille would fancy their chances against a leaky Metz defense, which has shipped 49 goals this season. Les Dogues boast the second-best defense in the league, only behind Nice [24 goals] and tied with league leaders PSG, having conceded just 26 goals so far. They will be hoping these numbers count in their quest for a top-three finish, with Sunday’s clash against Metz a must-win.
Paulo Fonseca is expected to keep the familiar 4-2-3-1 with Jonathan David leading the attack. Adam Ounas is sidelined until mid-May due to a calf injury, while Andrej Ilić will not be available until early May with a broken foot. Samuel Umtiti is also sidelined until early May following a knee injury.
