Bayern take on Stuttgart in top-of-the-table race for second place finish.

Following a dramatic draw against Leverkusen, Stuttgart face off against Bayern Munich in a crucial top-of-the-table showdown that could define the race for a second-place Bundesliga finish.

VfB Stuttgart

Stuttgart remained 3rd on the Bundesliga table despite going two games without a win [DWWLD], following last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

Stuttgart was on the verge of ending Leverkusen’s season-long unbeaten run, having gone two goals up. However, goals from Amine Adli [61’] and Robert Andrich [90’+6] in stoppage-time denied Stuttgart all three points.

The draw left the hosts with 64 points [20W, 4D, & 7L] while they seek to end a two-game winless streak. Despite this, they have secured a place in the revamped UEFA Champions League format for the upcoming edition.

Borussia Dortmund's semi-final first-leg victory over PSG on Wednesday secured the Bundesliga a fifth Champions League qualifying spot in the new 2024/25 UCL format. This means VfB Stuttgart, RB Leipzig, and BVB are assured of Champions League football next season, regardless of the outcomes of the remaining three games.

Nevertheless, Die Schwaben will look to avoid back-to-back defeats at the hands of Bayern after a 3-0 loss in the reverse fixture in December 2023. A 3—5—2 formation with Deniz Undav and Serhou Guirassy in attack is expected.

Maximilian Mittelstädt and Enzo Millot are both suspended, while as many as four players, including Dan-Axel Zagadou [ACL injury], are ruled out.

FC Bayern München

Bayern Munich are coming off a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg. "We started very well and could have taken the lead in the first minute. We conceded the goal, and things got difficult. It got better in the second half. We showed more determination,'' Thomas Tuchel said following the draw.

Back in the Bundesliga, second-placed Bayern, with 69 points (22W, 3D, & 6L), are in the race to finish second, with Saturday’s opponents just five points adrift. Bayern picked up a 2-1 win over Frankfurt last weekend, their third consecutive victory (LLWWW). With three games left to play, a victory here would guarantee Bayern a second-place finish.

Victory would also hand Bayern back-to-back away wins over Stuttgart following a 2-1 win in this exact fixture last season. The familiar 4-2-3-1 formation, with Harry Kane in attack, is expected once again.

Having been criticized by manager Thomas Tuchel following his involvement in both goals in the 2-2 draw against Madrid, Kim Min-Jae could find himself dropped from the starting line-up. Leroy Sané and Matthijs de Ligt are both in doubt for the weekend’s game, while Kingsley Coman remains ruled out.
