Girona hoping to remain in contention for second-place finish.

Valencia look to break their five-game winless streak as they host high-flying Girona, with both teams determined to rewrite their recent narratives in Sunday’s intriguing La Liga clash at Mestalla.

Valencia

Valencia's winless streak reached five matches [LLLDL] after a 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad on Thursday, dropping them to 9th place with 48 points [13W, 9D, & 14L]. “We have not lost to just any team. We lost against a great team. The start wasn't good for us," Valencia coach Rubén Baraja said after Thursday's defeat.

Los Ches will hope to end their five-game winless run when they host one of the league's top sides, Girona. The hosts have either won or lost in their seven La Liga meetings with the visitors [4W, 0D, & 3L]. Only against Pontevedra [8W, 0D, & 4L] and Alcoyano [8W, 0D, & 0L] have Los Ches gone more games without a draw than against the Catalan side in the history of the competition.

Coming into Sunday’s clash, Valencia's struggles in attack have been at the forefront of their inconsistent campaign, as Baraja's side have failed to score in their last three matches. Failure to find the net on Sunday will see the home side play four successive matches in the competition without scoring since January 2008 under Ronald Koeman.

A 4-4-2 formation with Roman Yaremchuk and Andre Almeida was seen against Sociedad and is expected for Sunday's clash with Girona. Meanwhile, Jaume Doménech and Fran Perez are ruled out with hamstring and back injuries, respectively, with both not expected to feature until the end of the season.

Girona

Girona's four-match unbeaten streak came to an end following a 1-0 defeat to Villarreal on Tuesday. The White and Reds are currently in third place with 75 points and have secured qualification for their first-ever UEFA Champions League campaign.

While they have the potential to leapfrog Barcelona, who are on 79 points, into second place, they must also keep an eye on fourth-placed Atletico Madrid with 73 points. "Achieving third place would also be historic," Míchel said during a pre-match press conference for the game against Valencia.

The visitors travel to Valencia with this possibility in mind and are also looking to complete a maiden league double over the hosts. However, the White and Reds have won just one of their last seven away games in La Liga, despite a strong start to the season with eight wins from their first eleven away games.

A 4-2-3-1 formation with Artem Dovbyk leading the attack is expected against Valencia.
