RB Leipzig eyeing five consecutive victories in trip to Hoffenheim.
Hoffenheim look to end their five-game losing streak against high-flying RB Leipzig when they clash at PreZero Arena on Friday evening, with a temporary seventh-place spot on the line.
TSG Hoffenheim
Despite a late brace from Andrej Kramarić (73' & 84'), Hoffenheim suffered a 3-2 loss to relegation-threatened Bochum, having gone three goals down. Last weekend’s failed comeback at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion left Hoffenheim alternating between a loss and a win in their last five Bundesliga games (LWLWL).
The hosts, who are in 9th place on the Bundesliga table with 39 points (11W, 6D, 14L), have a difficult fixture up next on Friday against Leipzig. Hoffenheim will be hoping to get back to winning ways, although they are on a five-game losing streak against Leipzig in all competitions, defeating them only once in 13 attempts (10W, 2D, 1L).
Die Kraichgauer, who finished 12th last season, are six points outside the top six with three games left to play, leaving European qualifying places mathematically within reach. An unlikely victory against the Red Bulls will see Hoffenheim climb two places up the table temporarily, with 7th-placed Freiburg (40 points) scheduled to face FC Koln on Saturday.
A 3-5-2 formation with Maximilian Beier and ex-Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst in attack is expected. Manager Pellegrino Matarazzo, who has a 37% winning rate since taking over in February 2023, will be without the suspended Umut Tohumcu.
RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig picked up a comeback 4-1 win over Dortmund in last weekend’s battle for the top four. Jadon Sancho had put the Black & Yellows in front with a goal midway through the first half before Loïs Openda restored parity three minutes later.
With ten minutes left on the clock, Christoph Baumgartner squeezed in the fourth to complete the comeback for the Red Bulls. The win helped Leipzig increase the gap over 5th-placed Dortmund to five points, as they now have 62 points.
With the upcoming trip on Friday, Leipzig could increase the gap even more as they look to pick up five wins in a row, having won the last four Bundesliga games. A win at Hoffenheim will see the Red Bulls take a huge step towards another UEFA Champions League qualification, which would be their seventh.
Marco Rose is expected to deploy the now familiar 4-2-2-2 formation with Loïs Openda and Benjamin Šeško, who was also on target last weekend, in attack. The Red Bulls will be without Mohamed Simakan and Christopher Lenz.
