Marseille visits Toulouse after Europa League semifinal qualification.
Toulouse aim to extend their unbeaten run to four games as they host a Marseille side desperate to end a three-match losing streak in a Sunday showdown at Stadium de Toulouse.
Toulouse
Toulouse stretched their unbeaten run to three games after last weekend’s 2-1 win over Rennes, following two first-half goals from Cristian Cásseres Jr. and Moussa Diarra. Now sitting in 11th place, they have accumulated 36 points after nine wins, nine draws, and eleven losses.
With a goal ratio of 1.17 per game this season, having scored 34 goals in 29 Ligue 1 matches, Toulouse aim to extend their unbeaten streak to four games. Ahead of Sunday's clash, they are only three points behind 9th-place Marseille. A win here would bring them level on points with Marseille, though they would remain below Marseille based on goal difference.
However, Toulouse’s recent form against Marseille could pose a challenge. They are on a nine-game winless run against Marseille, losing eight of those fixtures. Additionally, they have not won in their last 19 Ligue 1 encounters against OM, with seven draws and twelve losses.
Manager Carles Martinez Novell is expected to field a 3—4—2—1 formation with Thijs Dallinga leading the attack. Mikkel Desler is ruled out with a calf injury until later this month.
Olympique Marseille
Marseille qualified for the semifinals of the Europa League on Thursday via penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw with Benfica. OM will face Atalanta in the first-leg semi-final clash on May 2.
In Ligue 1, Marseille are in 9th place with 39 points (10W, 9D, & 9L), having suffered three defeats in a row (WWLLL). Les Olympiens, who have now conceded 33 goals this season, failed to make an appearance last weekend, leaving the 3-1 loss to LOSC Lille as their last Ligue 1 outing.
Despite the season-long struggles, OM have their sights set on finishing in European qualifying places. They are currently five points outside the top five ahead of their trip to Toulouse, where they hope to end the three-game losing streak.
However, they remain on the verge of losing four straight games for the first time since April 2015. A torrid run of form on the road could hamper Marseille’s much-needed confidence, with the club having the reputation of the worst away record this season (2W, 4D, 8L).
A 4-3-3 formation with Iliman Ndiaye, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Luis Henrique in attack is expected. Samuel Gigot and Amine Harit are both suspended for the weekend’s game.
