Lyon in search of away win as Toulouse host Les Gones.
As Toulouse FC seek to snap their 15-game Ligue 1 winless streak against Olympique Lyonnais, both teams, mired in early-season inconsistencies, aim to galvanize their campaigns in this intriguing clash at Stadium de Toulouse.
Toulouse
Toulouse have experienced a mixed start to their 2024-2025 Ligue 1 campaign, beginning with back-to-back draws in their opening two games. A win sandwiched between two losses further highlights the team's inconsistency, with their latest result being a 2-0 defeat to Brest last weekend.
After conceding an early goal, Toulouse had a chance to equalise from the penalty spot, but Zakaria Aboukhlal's miss proved costly. Les Violets conceded a second goal in stoppage time, resulting in their second league defeat in three games.
"I think we played enough, we generated enough, we did enough things to win the game, but of course, football is if you don’t score, you cannot win games," Carles Martínez Novell remarked after the game. He emphasized the need to "keep working and try to be better next week," as they focus on this Sunday’s league encounter with Lyon at the Stadium de Toulouse.
Currently 13th in the league standings, Les Violets aim to bounce back with a win against 14th-placed Lyon, hoping to extend the narrow point gap over their opponents. However, the hosts have not won any of their last 15 Ligue 1 games against Lyon, with this being their second-longest winless run against a single opponent in the top-flight after Marseille.
Having secured a 2-0 win over Le Havre in their last home league match, Novell’s men could achieve back-to-back clean sheets at home in Ligue 1 for the first time since August 2019. A 3-4-2-1 formation might be deployed this weekend, featuring Yann Gboho in attack.
Olympique Lyonnais
Lyon got off to a flying start in their Europa League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Olympiacos in midweek. Goals from Rayan Cherki in the 65th minute and substitute Saïd Benrahma in the 71st minute secured three points in Pierre Sage’s first European game in charge.
"What did we learn from Sunday? We knew it was a big disappointment because when you see the match we played and all the chances we created, we should never have lost, so we were really fired up for this match," Cherki reflected after the match. He recalled last weekend's disappointing 3-2 loss to Marseille in the league, where Lyon fell short against 10-man Marseille, despite having a numerical advantage for almost the entire game following Leonardo Balerdi’s 5th-minute red card.
Les Gones, with a recent form of LLWDL, will now look to build on their success on the European front. They aim to overturn their underwhelming league performance with a win as they travel to Toulouse this weekend. A 3—5—2 formation is expected, featuring Alexandre Lacazette and Gift Orban in attack.
