Lille to begin UCL campaign in trip to Portugal against Sporting.
As Sporting CP aim to leverage their home advantage against a struggling LOSC Lille in Tuesday's Champions League opener at Estádio José Alvalade, excitement looms with Sporting's red-hot form contrasted starkly by Lille's quest to overcome their European jitters.
Sporting CP
After emerging as champions of the 2023-2024 Liga Portugal, Sporting gained automatic entry into this season's revamped UEFA Champions League. This marks their third appearance in four years. With 36 teams in the competition and eight games ahead, the Lions will fancy their chances of finishing the UCL league phase as one of the top eight sides, securing automatic qualification into the round of 16.
Only four games will be played in front of a home crowd, so Tuesday’s encounter against Lille on home turf provides the perfect opportunity to kickstart the competition. Sporting's 100 percent record in their last five league games [WWWWW], including a commanding 3-0 victory against Arouca, sets a confident tone for Tuesday's game.
Sporting have performed well against French teams on home soil, winning five of their last seven meetings [5W, 0D, 2L]. However, they have managed just three wins in their last 12 European home games [3W, 4D, 5L] and have lost seven of their last 12 Champions League matches in Lisbon [5W, 0D, 7L].
The in-form Viktor Gyökeres, who has contributed to 16 goals for both club and country in his last eight games, is expected to start in attack. Sporting will likely adopt a 3—4—2—1 formation against Lille.
LOSC Lille
Meanwhile, Lille are coming into Tuesday’s Champions League encounter following back-to-back league defeats. A 2-1 loss away to Slavia Prague in the UCL playoff knockout stage proved inconsequential, as the Mastiffs advanced to the competition proper with a 3-2 aggregate win, following a 2-0 victory against the Czech side on home turf.
It was more of the same on the domestic front, as Bruno Génésio’s men slipped to eighth place after a 3-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and a 1-0 loss to newly promoted Saint-Étienne. Lille will be looking to put an end to their unimpressive run of form when they make the trip to Lisbon on Tuesday.
However, the Mastiffs have lost their only two games against the hosts in European competition, with the Portuguese side winning 1-0 and 2-1 away in the 2010-11 UEFA Europa League group stage. Furthermore, Lille have never won their opening game of a UCL campaign, losing four of such matches.
Jonathan David is expected to start in attack when Génésio deploys the 3—4—2—1 formation. Employing his talents effectively will be key to turning their fortunes around.
