Bruno Fernandes available against Southampton despite injury scare.

Southampton's quest for their first top-flight victory this season faces a stern test against Manchester United in an early Saturday kick-off at St. Mary’s Stadium.

Southampton

A stoppage-time goal from Yukinari Sugawara in the 95th minute failed to prevent Southampton from a third successive Premier League defeat. This recent 3-1 loss to Brentford came just before the international break.

The Saints will now aim to secure their first victory since returning to the top flight when they face Manchester United in Saturday’s early kick-off encounter. With no points after three games, Southampton currently sit in 19th place in the Premier League table.

While it's early to talk about relegation, another defeat would make them the first club to suffer four consecutive opening losses in three different campaigns in the league. Additionally, Southampton are on a fourteen-game winless run against Manchester United, with eight draws and six losses.

‘We have to stop making mistakes,’ said manager Russell Martin after the defeat to Brentford. This weekend, Martin will hope for a more clinical finish against United, another team prone to defensive errors.

A 4-3-3 formation featuring Adam Armstrong, Cameron Archer, and Brereton in attack is expected for this Saturday’s match.

Manchester United

While Manchester United are much higher up the table, an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Liverpool last time out leaves the Red Devils in 14th place with only 3 points. Three costly errors from the Red Devils failed to go unpunished in front of the home crowd, leaving United with back-to-back defeats [WLL].

"We made mistakes, and they were very clinical in finishing; they did very well. All three goals are mistakes from us - individual errors," Erik ten Hag told Sky Sports.

A return from the break could bring the Red Devils good tidings, considering their fabulous away record against the Saints. Manchester United have returned with at least a point in their last 12 trips to Southampton [7W, 5D, 0L].

In addition, Erik ten Hag’s side have only lost one of their previous 30 Premier League games against promoted sides [22W, 7D, 1L]. Ten Hag gave Joshua Zirkzee his debut start last time out against Liverpool and is expected to keep him in the lineup with Rasmus Højlund in doubt.

Zirkzee, who bagged the opener in the Netherlands' 5-2 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, will lead the attack in the familiar 4-2-3-1 formation. Luke Shaw remains in doubt, while Leny Yoro is ruled out.

Bruno Fernandes, who was on the scoresheet, picked up a knock in Portugal's 2-1 victory over Scotland but is expected to be available for the trip to Southampton.
