Southampton back in search of maiden season win.
In a crucial Premier League clash at St. Mary's Stadium, Southampton aim to secure their elusive first win of the season against an Everton side eager to break a 32-year away jinx.
Southampton
Southampton picked up a 3-2 win over Stoke City on Tuesday in the EFL Cup, setting up a December 17 fixture against Liverpool in the quarterfinals. "I'm pleased we got through; they deserved it. The fans were great; they stuck with the team even at 2-2, so I'm pleased for them as well," Russell Martin said after the victory.
Back in the Premier League, the Saints lost by a narrow 1-0 scoreline against Manchester City last weekend. That defeat kept Southampton at the bottom of the table, as one of the three sides yet to pick up a win in the Premier League.
Earning their first win of the season ranks high on their list of priorities. With the hosts having a fine home record against Everton, Saturday's clash could be the elusive win they've been seeking. Southampton have won 13 Premier League home games against Everton. Alongside Newcastle, no side have they beaten more often on home soil in the competition than the Toffees.
However, a torrid run of form dating back to their last appearance in the Premier League could hinder them from securing three points. Southampton are winless in their last 22 Premier League matches [0W, 5D, 17L]. A 4-2-3-1 formation with Cameron Archer in attack is expected.
Everton
Everton are two places above the bottom three as they prepare for the trip to Southampton. The Toffees are unbeaten in their last five Premier League games, alternating between a draw and a win [DWDWD].
While Sean Dyche would like to see this pattern continue, Everton, who won their last away meeting against Southampton 2-1, have not won consecutive away league games against the Saints since January 1992. Breaking this 32-year jinx will certainly be on Dyche’s mind ahead of Saturday's encounter.
“We’ve got to find that level again down at Southampton as a start point – or a restart point,” the Everton boss said in a pre-match press conference. Currently in 16th place with 9 points [2W, 3D, 4L], Everton earned a 1-1 draw against Fulham last weekend.
Injuries have become a major concern for the team, but Dyche is expected to stick with the familiar 4-2-3-1 formation, featuring Dominic Calvert-Lewin in attack. “Dwight has got a chance; we are hopeful. Garner, though, is looking likely to be a more long-term absentee,” Dyche added in an injury update.
