Euro 2024: Slovakia eager to win successive games as Ukraine clash looms.
After a thrilling start with a win over Belgium, Slovakia's Falcons aim to secure a historic consecutive tournament victory against a determined Ukraine, who seek redemption after their opening defeat, when they clash at the Merkur Spiel-Arena on June 21.
Slovakia
Slovakia got their Euro 2024 campaign off to a great start with a hard-fought 1-0 win over highly-rated Belgium. The Falcons scored early in the game as Ivan Schranz capitalised on a mix-up in the Belgian defense.
Slovakia held on for victory despite Belgium's Romelu Lukaku finding the net twice, as the VAR came to the rescue on both occasions. 'It's a huge win, but we have to keep working. We are looking at the next games; we have to score in those games as well to meet our target and advance,' Slovakia head coach Francesco Calzona said.
The result leaves Slovakia [LDWWW] in second place in Group E with three points as they go up against Ukraine on Match Day 2. This will be the ninth encounter between both sides, with Slovakia winning just two of their previous eight meetings across all competitions [2W, 3D, & 3L].
However, Calzona's men are heading into this clash having won 10 of their last 14 matches across all competitions [10W, 1D, & 3L]. The Falcons, who have won just one match in each of the four major tournaments they have played, will be looking to win successive matches in a single tournament for the first time ever.
Róbert Boženík, Lukáš Haraslín, and Ivan Schranz are expected to team up in attack when Calzona deploys the 4-3-3. Juraj Kucka is a minor doubt having come off injured in the game against Belgium.
Ukraine
Ukraine were swept aside in a 3-0 defeat to Romania in their opening group game. Madrid’s Andriy Lunin, in goal for the Ukrainians, was culpable for the opening two goals.
The first, an early goal of the tournament contender by Nicolae Stanciu at 29 minutes, beat Ukraine’s goalkeeper from 25 yards. The second was another long-range effort from Razvan Marin at 53 minutes.
“We had possession but didn't create any chances. Nobody expected this result. We have to talk among ourselves, and we have to get ready for the next game,” Ukraine's head coach, Serhiy Rebrov, said.
The Blue and Yellow are bottom of Group E and will look to rekindle their European campaign with a win over Slovakia. However, Ukraine have won just one of four competitive meetings against Friday's opponents, with one win, two draws, and one loss, including a 1-0 win during the UEFA Nations League in 2018.
A 4—2—3—1 formation with Artem Dovbyk in attack was lined up against Romania, and a similar setup may be seen against Slovakia.
