Shakhtar Donetsk take on BSC Young Boys on home turf.
As Shakhtar Donetsk seek to channel their domestic dominance into a barren UEFA Champions League campaign, they face off against Young Boys, a side desperately aiming to break their scoring duck in Europe, under the watchful eye of Orel Grinfeeld this Wednesday at the Arena AufSchalke.
Shakhtar Donetsk
Goals from Oleksandr Zubkov and Artem Bondarenko helped the Moles to a 2-1 win over Chornomorets Odesa on Saturday. Back in the UEFA Champions League, Shakhtar Donetsk, along with Young Boys, RB Salzburg, and Bologna, are the only sides yet to score a goal in this season's top-tier competition.
The Miners' journey to Arsenal on UCL Matchday 3 ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat after goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk scored an own goal. With back-to-back defeats, the Ukrainian club, who are undefeated in their last eight domestic fixtures, will be keen on bringing their domestic form to European turf when they face Young Boys.
Both sides last met in the 2016-17 UCL qualifying phase. Despite the odds, Shakhtar, who have the fewest shots on target of any side, will be hoping to find the back of the net in Wednesday’s UCL encounter.
Fortunately, Shakhtar have a 100% winning record against Swiss outfits, winning all five encounters against such sides. Marino Pušić's side are expected to line up in a 4-1-2-3 formation with Zubkov, Danylo Sikan, and Newerton in the attack. Goalkeeper Tymur Puzankov will be assessed ahead of the match.
Young Boys
Thirty-fifth-placed Young Boys are one of the six sides yet to record a point in the UCL this season. They came close to grabbing their maiden point on Matchday 3 against Inter Milan, but Marcus Thuram's stoppage-time goal in the 90'+3 minute prevented the Swiss side from doing so.
They are one of only two sides to lose all three games without scoring, along with Salzburg. Young Boys’ only two competitive European meetings with a Ukrainian side came in the 2017-18 UEFA Europa League group stage, where they picked up a 2-2 draw away and lost 1-0 at home to Dynamo Kyiv.
The visitors, coming off a goalless draw against Zurich, are winless in three home games against Ukrainian sides, with 0 wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses. They have won only two in six games against such sides both home and away, with a record of 2 wins, 1 draw, and 3 losses.
Manager Joël Magnin is expected to start Ganvoula and Meschack Elia in the front line of a 4—4—2 formation. Mohamed Camara, Miguel Chaiwa, and Facinet Conte are all ruled out, alongside Saidy Janko, Patric Pfeiffer, and Mats Seiler.
