Sevilla in search of maiden win as Girona clash looms.
Sevilla will aim to break their winless streak and end a string of home defeats as they face a resurgent Girona, fresh off an impressive victory, this Sunday at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.
Sevilla
It has been a difficult start to life in Sevilla for García Pimienta, who is finding it hard to steer the Rojiblancos out of troubled waters. Sevilla are still winless after three matches, following a 2-2 draw against Las Palmas in their opening game, a disappointing 2-1 loss to Villarreal on home turf, and a goalless draw against Mallorca last time out.
This poor run is a stark reminder of last season's struggles, which saw them finish in 14th place, their worst finish in 24 years. Currently 17th on the table, just above 18th-place Mallorca, with the same goal difference, the Rojiblancos will now welcome Girona this weekend, hoping to secure a maiden win.
“We're up against a tough team with a lot of individual talent,” Pimienta said ahead of Sunday’s encounter. “We must give something back to the fans for spurring us on,” he added. Sevilla will look to claim all three points when they take on Girona this week.
However, recent struggles against Girona, which have seen the hosts fall to defeats in their last two home games in the league, will leave more questions than answers. Additionally, Sevilla have lost their last three La Liga games on home soil, a poor run of form they would be looking to end, having not lost four consecutive home games in the competition since the 2001-2002 season.
A 4-3-3 with Dodi Lukebakio, alongside new signings Chidera Ejuke and Kelechi Iheanacho in attack, is expected. “Saúl and Suso are the only players unavailable for the match,” Pimienta said, giving an update on team news. Saúl was sent off in the 89th minute against Mallorca.
Girona
Meanwhile, Girona bounced back from a disappointing start to the season to secure an impressive 4-0 victory over Osasuna last time out. Goals from Bryan Gil (34’), Viktor Tsygankov (53’), Abel Ruiz (56’), and Cristhian Stuani (90’) were enough to earn the White and Reds their first win of the season.
‘I am very happy with the game the team played,’ Girona’s coach Michel told reporters. Michel's side will now make the trip to Sevilla this weekend, looking to carry on the momentum with back-to-back wins.
The White and Reds have dominated this fixture, winning their last five games against Sevilla, their longest streak of consecutive victories against any opponent in the competition. Michel is expected to keep the 4-4-2 formation seen against Osasuna, with Abel Ruiz and Bojan Miovski in attack.
