AS Saint-Étienne vs. AS Monaco
In a high-stakes duel, relegation-threatened AS Saint-Étienne battles red-hot AS Monaco at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard this Saturday, with both sides desperate for pivotal points in their respective Ligue 1 campaigns.
Saint-Étienne
Saint Étienne salvaged a point in the mid-week relegation clash following a come-back 2-2 draw against Bordeaux at the Matmut Atlantique. Bordeaux picked up the lead inside the first twenty minutes after a well-struck shot inside the box by Mara (16'). Minutes later, Emile Junior Onana (23') left Bordeaux with a two-goal lead after a fine header.
But Denis Bouanga (34') cut the Greens’ two-goal deficit to one before Arnaud Nordin’s 65th-minute leveler left both sides with a point apiece. St. Étienne would like to return to winning ways, with their recent form showing DLLWD, on Saturday in a bid to make a late push to leave the relegation play-off spot where they sit with 31 points from 7 wins, 10 draws, and 16 losses.
The Greens are a point adrift of 17th-place Clermont Foot, who have 32 points. A victory here could see Les Verts move two spots ahead, from 18th to 16th place, if favorable results emerge elsewhere. However, St. Étienne has lost its last two Ligue 1 games against Monaco, conceding seven goals and scoring just one.
Pascal Dupraz lined up with a 3-4-3 formation against Bordeaux and could do so again against Monaco on Saturday. Les Verts have no new injury worries following the mid-week clash.
Monaco
In the mid-week clash at the Stade Louis II, Monaco picked up a 1-0 win in the local derby against OGC Nice, courtesy of a single goal from Aleksandr Golovin at the stroke of half-time. The victory saw Monaco leapfrog the Eaglets as they moved into 5th place on the Ligue 1 table.
Monaco has won five consecutive league games heading into this match against Saint-Étienne. After Wednesday’s narrow victory, Philippe Clement said, "It's good to have won five consecutive matches, and now I’m curious because it’s the first time that they’ve done that with me this season. I want to see if everyone can keep their feet on the ground and remain focused in this big match against Saint-Étienne."
With five wins in a row, Monaco has the best ongoing winning run in the big-five European leagues at the moment. ASM has not enjoyed a longer such run in the top-flight since January-February 2021, when they completed seven in a row.
Philippe Clement and Les Monégasques could appear with the 4-2-3-1 formation once again against the Greens, with skipper Ben Yedder leading the attack.
