Lille to kick off Ligue 1 campaign against Reims.
As Reims embark on their new campaign with aspirations of climbing the Ligue 1 ladder against a Lille side eager to extend their unbeaten streak in season openers, both teams aim to make an early statement at Stade Auguste-Delaune II, setting the stage for a captivating clash led by debutant managers on either side.
Reims
After a ninth-place finish last time out, Reims will begin their new campaign against Lille, aiming to finish higher up the table this season. They came just four points shy of qualifying for European football via the Conference League, a spot that went to RC Lens.
Luka Elsner is set to make his competitive debut with the club on Saturday when Reims face Lille in the season opener. His team has bolstered its ranks with defender Cédric Kipré from West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer and 18-year-old goalkeeper Léo Ripert from Olympique Lyon.
Despite mixed fortunes during the pre-season tour, which could raise concerns, Reims is on a two-game winning streak. Their previous home defeat is a motivating factor to avoid consecutive losses against Lille, after a 1-0 setback last time.
While back-to-back home victories could inspire Elsner’s squad, history shows a balanced outcome when these teams clash, with each securing four wins and three draws since Reims returned to Ligue 1 in 2018-19. For the weekend's clash, a 4-4-2 formation with Reda Khadra and Mohamed Daramy in attack is expected.
Martin Adeline is the only confirmed absentee for Reims.
LOSC Lille
While Lille are vying for a place in the upcoming revamped edition of the UEFA Champions League, with a playoff against SK Slavia Prague coming up on Tuesday, Les Dogues will be hoping to get their domestic campaign off to a flying start. New boss, Bruno Génésio, will also be making his domestic debut for Lille when he leads his side out.
Although the club lost Yeny Yoro to Manchester United for €62 million, Lille signed centre-back Aïssa Mandi as a replacement from Villarreal. The lesser-known Mbappe, Ethan, also joined the club from PSG on a free transfer, while Lille handed out €8 million for Osame Sahraoui from SC Heerenveen.
Lille, who have won two of their last four trips to Reims, will be looking to add another victory to their tally when they visit Stade Auguste-Delaune II at the weekend. Furthermore, having gone unbeaten in the last seven opening-day games [4W, 3D, 0L], Les Dogues will be looking to go eight without defeat.
A 5—4—1 with Jonathan David in attack is expected against Reims. Benjamin André is suspended, while Samuel Umtiti is ruled out via injury.
