Real Madrid meet Borussia Dortmund UCL final rematch.
In a thrilling rematch of last season's UCL final, Real Madrid look to capitalize on their home advantage and rebound from a recent slip as they host a formidable Borussia Dortmund, who arrive at the Santiago Bernabéu buoyed by impressive early tournament form and eager to break their winless streak against the Spanish giants.
Real Madrid
Real Madrid returns to Champions League action this Tuesday, aiming to bounce back from matchday 2’s disappointment. A 1-0 defeat to Lille in their second UCL game of the season ended Los Blancos’ 36-game unbeaten run, leaving them in 17th on the league phase standings.
‘This defeat can be a great opportunity if we are able to react well,’ Carlo Ancelotti said after the loss. Indeed, Madrid responded with a 2-0 league victory over Villareal, followed by a 2-1 win against Celta Vigo last time out.
Madrid took the lead via Kylian Mbappe in the 20th minute of the first half. However, Los Blancos gave up their lead in the 51st minute, but a Vinicius Junior goal in the 66th minute proved decisive as Madrid secured the hard-fought victory.
‘Two spectacular goals; both have enough quality to do this kind of thing, and they have taken advantage of it,’ Ancelotti said after the win. The Italian manager will now hope his team capitalizes on home advantage when they host last season's UCL final opponents, Dortmund, this Tuesday.
Having won their last three games against the German side, including a most recent 2-0 victory in the 2023-2024 UCL final, the hosts will aim to extend their streak on Tuesday as they look to climb up the standings. A 4—2—1—3 is expected, with Rodrygo, Mbappe, and Vinicius Junior in attack.
Borussia Dortmund
Buoyed by their incredible form in the tournament, UCL league phase leaders Dortmund will look to get one over Madrid on Tuesday. Nuri Şahin’s side appears to have put last season’s heartbreak behind them, kicking off this campaign with a 3-0 victory against Club Brugge in their UCL opener, followed by a 7-1 mauling of Celtic on matchday two.
The Prussians will now hope to continue this impressive form when they travel to Madrid. However, they have failed to record a win in any of their seven away games against the Whites, with a record of 0 wins, 2 draws, and 5 losses.
Dortmund is coming into this game off a 2-1 league win against Bundesliga debutants St. Pauli last Friday, thanks to Serhou Guirassy’s late winner in the 83rd minute. The 28-year-old striker is expected to lead the attack when former Madrid player, now manager, Şahin, deploys the 4-2-3-1 formation.
Niklas Süle, who missed last Friday’s game due to illness, could be back on Tuesday. Şahin mentioned, “He really hasn't been feeling well in the last few days. But I hope we’ll have him with us in Madrid.”
