Girona back on UCL MD4 in trip to PSV.
As PSV seek their first Champions League triumph in the revamped format, they face off against Girona in an historic first meeting, underlined by both clubs' contrasting fortunes and historical challenges against Spanish sides.
PSV
PSV return to Champions League action this Tuesday for their matchday 4 clash with Girona, aiming to pick up their first win in the revamped UEFA Champions League format. The Dutch side currently sits in 28th place in the UCL league phase after a 1-1 draw with PSG on UCL MD3, a 1-1 draw against Sporting CP on MD2, and a 3-1 defeat on MD1 against Juventus.
The Farmers head into Tuesday’s clash with Girona on the back of their first league defeat of the season, losing 3-2 to Ajax in De Topper on Saturday. "We were not good in the first half. During pressure, there was a lot of doubt and in possession we were sloppy," Peter Bosz remarked after the match. "The pace was too slow to destroy an opponent," he added.
Tuesday’s clash against Girona is the first-ever meeting with the Spanish side. However, the hosts have struggled against Spanish teams, winning just two of 20 European games against teams from the South European nation [2W, 9D, 9L]. In addition, the Farmers have won just two of their last 15 home games against Spanish sides in European competitions [2W, 8D, 5L].
However, PSV are currently on their longest run without a home defeat in the UCL since an 11-match unbeaten streak in December 2005, having not lost in the last five [1W, 4D, 0L]. Johan Bakayoko, Luuk de Jong, and Noa Lang are expected in attack in a 4—3—3 formation.
Girona
Girona finally secured their first UCL win, picking up a 2-0 victory over ŠK Slovan Bratislava on matchday 3 after defeats in their opening two matches. The White and Reds currently sit in 24th place in the UCL league phase with three points.
Míchel's side are looking to become the first Spanish team to win away at PSV in a European competition since Granada achieved this feat in October 2020. However, Girona could also become the first side from Spain to lose their first two away matches in the UCL, having lost away at PSG on matchday 1.
The White and Reds are coming into this clash on the back of two straight wins across all competitions [LWLWW] after a 4-3 victory against CD Leganés in La Liga on Saturday. Míchel is expected to set up a 3-4-2-1 formation, with Bojan Miovski likely to lead the attack.
Girona will have as many as seven players missing for this match.
