Milan in search of win against newly promoted Parma.

Newly promoted Parma, eager for their first win of the season, host AC Milan at the Ennio Tardini Stadium this Saturday, aiming to build on their commendable draw against Fiorentina.

Parma

After making their way back to Italy’s top flight following a three-year absence, Parma were held to a 1-1 draw with ten-man Fiorentina on Match Day 1. Romanian international Dennis Man [22’] placed Parma in the lead with a fabulous left-footed 18-yard strike before an equally wonderful goal from Cristiano Biraghi [75’] restored parity at the Ennio Tardini.

Parma take on Milan this weekend, hoping to avoid defeat at home once again. This will be the first time the home side will play two opening games on home soil.

Manager Fabio Pecchia could look to the home crowd for the second time in a row in an attempt to unsettle Fonseca’s visiting side. While Parma has not defeated Milan in their last five games across all competitions [0W, 2D, 3L], they earned a 2-2 draw the last time they faced the visitors in December 2020, with Théo Hernandez levelling the scoreline in the final minute.

Twenty-year-old forward Ange-Yoan Bonny could sit at the top of Pecchia’s 4—2—3—1 yet again, having done so last time out. Hernani [calf] and Gabriel Charpentier [muscle injury] are ruled out, while skipper Enrico Del Prato returns to the squad following suspension.

Milan

A late rally saw AC Milan avoid an opening-day defeat at the hands of Torino, who were two goals up in the 68th minute. An own goal from Malick Thiaw coupled with a well-composed header from Duván Zapata left Milan with a two-goal deficit.

However, Álvaro Morata came off the bench for his Milan debut and earned himself a maiden goal for the club. Five minutes into stoppage time, super-sub Noah Okafor struck for the equalizer.

While the result had luck written all over it, it helped Fonseca escape defeat on his managerial debut, having replaced Stefano Pioli on July 1. With a trip to Parma next, the 51-year-old former Roma boss will be keen to earn his first competitive victory with the club.

Fonseca wouldn't be too worried, knowing Milan has earned a win in one of their two opening games in the last 12 seasons. In addition, Milan has scored in each of their last 16 games against Parma.

Luka Jović will keep his place at the top of Fonseca’s 4—2—3—1 formation. However, Morata will miss Saturday’s fixture after picking up a thigh injury against Torino. Florenzi and Marco Sportiello are also ruled out of the weekend’s game.
