Gonçalo Ramos undergoes surgery before PSG's clash against Montpellier.
As Paris Saint-Germain aim to secure consecutive victories in their Ligue 1 campaign, they host a resilient Montpellier at the Parc des Princes this Friday evening, with both teams eager to maintain their unbeaten starts to the season.
Paris Saint Germain
A 4-1 win over Le Havre saw PSG begin the season with a win last Friday, thanks to goals from Lee Kang-in [3’], Ousmane Dembélé [84'], and Bradley Barcola [86’]. Randal Kolo Muani [90’ P.] was also on the score sheet from the penalty spot in the final minute at Stade Océane.
After calming fears of post-Mbappe life, Les Parisiens are now looking to bag successive victories seven days after Match Day 1, as they welcome Montpellier to Parc des Princes. While PSG are on the verge of winning four Ligue 1 games in a row in the current calendar year, they have won 12 of their last 13 games against the visitors [12W, 0D, 1L].
However, PSG have won only two of their eight home games in Ligue 1 [2W, 5D, 1L] in 2024, an alarming number of victories by their lofty standards. While a €60 million deal for Manuel Ugarte (23) could materialise soon, PSG will be without Presnel Kimpembe for another lengthy spell after suffering an injury setback.
The 29-year-old is yet to play any form of competitive football in 18 months. He won't be the only one on the treatment table, as official reports indicate Gonçalo Ramos underwent surgery following an ankle injury midway through the first half in the Ligue 1 curtain-raiser against Le Havre.
Luis Enrique will have to make do without the centre forward when he deploys a 4—3—3 for Friday’s Match Day 2 opener against Montpellier.
Montpellier
Montpellier, on the other hand, salvaged a point in a 1-1 draw with Strasbourg, whose manager, Liam Rosenior, was making his managerial debut. Habib Diarra put Strasbourg ahead two minutes shy of the hour mark. However, skipper Téji Savanier came to the rescue with a 67th-minute penalty, ensuring Montpellier remained unbeaten after back-to-back draws across two seasons.
Montpellier, who finished in 12th place last term, face a formidable opponent on Friday and are hoping to go three Ligue 1 games without defeat. Achieving this would see them unbeaten in successive opening games for the second time in a row, having accomplished a similar feat in the 2023/24 season.
Michel Der Zakarian, who boasts a 38.89 winning percentage with the club, may choose to line up in a 3-4-2-1 formation, as seen last weekend. This strategy would leave Nigerian forward, 24-year-old Akor Jerome Adams, leading the attack.
