PSG on the verge of third successive and 12th Ligue 1 title.
After brushing aside Lorient, PSG gear up to face relegation-threatened Le Havre at the Parc des Princes on Saturday night, aiming to clinch their third consecutive Ligue 1 title.
Paris Saint Germain
PSG’s would-have-been title celebrations were put on hold despite a 4-1 win over Lorient in the midweek round of fixtures because Monaco picked up a 1-0 win over Lille. A brace from Kylian Mbappé [22’, 90’] and Ousmane Dembélé [19’, 60’], who both returned after being rested, took PSG one step closer to their 12th Ligue 1 title.
With an 11-point gap between Les Parisiens and Monaco and four games left to play, a win for table-topping PSG [20W, 9D, 1L] this weekend will secure their third successive Ligue 1 title. Luis Enrique noted, "We'll be able to play for the title at home on Saturday, which would also be good," in a post-match interview after Wednesday’s win.
This objective shouldn’t be much of a problem for PSG, who have won the last four meetings, including friendlies, against relegation-threatened Le Havre by a combined scoreline of 16-0. With the comfortable midweek win, Luis Enrique is not expected to alter the attacking line-up, with Gonçalo Ramos and goal-scorers Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé in attack.
Le Havre
Le Havre [LLDLL] dropped into the relegation playoff spot after last weekend’s defeat in the relegation battle against 15th-placed FC Metz. With 28 points [6W, 10D, 14L], they are only one point adrift of assured safety going into the weekend’s game against Paris Saint Germain.
Despite being on an eight-game losing run against the home side in all meetings, Le Havre will be looking to spoil PSG’s would-be title celebrations. A positive result would increase their chances of remaining in the top flight.
Despite an underwhelming season, sporting director Mathieu Bodmer dismissed the idea of parting ways with current coach Luka Elsner. Bodmer reiterated that the season’s objective is to remain in Ligue 1. "Sacking Luka? What an idea! Luka and his staff are 500% focused on the objective of staying up," he said earlier in the week.
Elsner deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation for the game against Metz, replacing the 5-3-2 seen in the 1-0 loss to Nantes in mid-April. He is expected to stick to the former formation for Saturday’s clash against PSG.
