PSG face UCL debutants Girona in league phase clash.

Paris Saint-Germain will seek to continue their impressive form as they welcome debutants Girona to Parc des Princes for their UEFA Champions League opener on Wednesday night.

Paris Saint Germain

What better way could there be than a comeback 3-1 win over Brest ahead of their maiden fixture in the revamped edition of the UEFA Champions League?

Many had contemplated difficult times for Les Parisiens following Kylian Mbappe’s departure, but life at Parc des Princes has been promising so far. PSG are Ligue 1 leaders with four opening victories [WWWW], which leaves them three points ahead of their nearest rivals, 2nd-placed Marseille, and 3rd-placed Monaco.

This Wednesday, PSG will be looking to replicate their domestic form on European soil when they face UCL debutants Girona. An impressive record on home soil leaves Les Parisiens with only one defeat in 36 home games in the initial phase of the UEFA Champions League [28W, 7D, 1L].

PSG will aim to keep those numbers intact when they take on Girona for the first of eight games in the UCL league phase. A place in the top eight at the end of the league phase remains the ultimate objective for the French champions.

Luis Enrique will see no reason to alter the 4-3-3 formation deployed against Brest, with Marco Asensio expected to play in the centre-forward role alongside Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembélé, who bagged a brace at the weekend.

Girona

UCL debutants Girona will be hoping to pick up a win on their very first appearance in the competition when they make the trip to Parc des Princes. An unbelievable fairy-tale run last season saw Girona secure an unprecedented 3rd-place finish and automatic qualification for the competition.

With qualification for the revamped edition of the UEFA Champions League, Girona became the 14th Spanish side to feature in the Champions League proper. Girona are also one of five clubs making their UCL debuts in this edition of the competition, alongside Aston Villa, Bologna, Brest, and Slovan Bratislava.

A 4-1 loss to Barcelona in the Catalan derby at the weekend saw Girona's two-game winning run come to an end [DLWWL], in what appears to be a slow start to the season. Nevertheless, with the last three Spanish sides—Villarreal, Sevilla, and Malaga—earning a win on their UCL debuts, Girona will be looking to follow similar lines.

Manager Michel could mirror the opposition’s 4-3-3 formation, with Abel Ruiz poised to lead the attack. Viktor Tsyhankov and Bryan Gil could team up with the 24-year-old in attack.
