'We need to be calm,' Pierre Sage says ahead of Strasbourg clash.
After back-to-back defeats, Lyon aim to secure their first win of the season against a buoyant Strasbourg side at Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Friday night.
Olympique Lyonnais
In what appeared to be another torrid start to the season, Lyon suffered their second defeat in as many games after last weekend’s deserved 2-0 loss to Monaco. With no shot on target and a ball possession of only 39% in front of the home crowd, Lyon were left with two opening defeats in successive seasons, having also suffered a similar fate last term.
With back-to-back defeats, Lyon are just above bottom-placed Brest by goal difference, with both sides having no points, along with newly promoted duo St. Etienne and Angers SCO. ‘We've had two lacklustre performances that we need to improve,’ Sage said in a pre-match press conference on Wednesday, while calling for calm.
‘We need to be calm. Last year, after we lost to Rennes, I was called before the supporters to give them my best wishes. I told them we needed to be calm. There are only a few people capable of changing things: the staff and the players,’ he added.
On Friday, he would be hoping to steer his side to a maiden win. However, Lyon are on the verge of going three opening games without a win. A 4-2-3-1, with Alexandre Lacazette in attack, is expected.
‘Nicolas Tagliafico is still undergoing treatment, so I think he'll be unfit for the match,’ Pierre Sage said in an injury update.
Strasbourg
Unlike Lyon, Strasbourg picked up a comfortable 3-1 win over Rennes last weekend. The victory complements an opening-day draw against Montpellier.
It was the maiden Ligue 1 win for new manager Liam Rosenior, who slipped into the managerial seat on July 25, following Patrick Vieira’s departure after one season. With the win, their fourth home win in 2024, Le Racing have four points (1W, 1D, 0L), leaving them in 6th place ahead of Match Day 3.
Picking up back-to-back victories will be particularly high on the agenda this weekend. However, with only one win and 17 defeats in their last 22 games against Les Gones (1W, 4D, 17L), Strasbourg could return as unhappy travellers after their trip to Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
A 3-1-4-2 formation with Diego Moreira and Emanuel Emegha in attack may be seen once again for Friday’s clash against Lyon. The visitors will be without as many as three players, including Thomas Delaine and Milos Lukovic.
