Choc des Olympiques - Lyon goes head-to-head with Marseille.
The Choc des Olympiques sees Olympique Lyonnais host Olympique de Marseille this Sunday evening, with both squads eager to capitalize on their recent form and secure crucial Ligue 1 points.
Olympique Lyonnais
After kicking off the 2024-2025 Ligue 1 campaign with back-to-back losses, Lyon are slowly finding their footing. Pierre Sage’s men have picked up four points from their last two league games [LLWD], including a thrilling 4-3 win against Strasbourg on matchday three before playing out a goalless draw against Lens last time out.
‘We played a good match, seriously,’ Sage said after the draw. ‘We created opportunities that should have allowed us to transform our game into a victory. But we did not seize them,’ he added.
With the draw, Les Gones sit in 13th place on the Ligue 1 table, just below 12th-placed Toulouse. They will now shift focus to their matchday five encounter with Marseille, hoping to secure back-to-back home victories for the first time this season.
Lyon will be looking to draw inspiration from recent success against Marseille going into Sunday’s clash, having secured a 1-0 victory over the visitors in their last meeting at home. However, their struggles in defence, which has seen them concede 15 goals in their last seven home league games, leave little hope for achieving the same feat.
Pierre Sage is expected to deploy the familiar 3-5-2 formation, with Gift Orban and Alexandre Lacazette in attack for Sunday’s Choc des Olympiques.
Olympique Marseille
Marseille started the season on a fine note under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, picking up ten points from a possible twelve. A resounding 5-1 victory against Brest in their league opener was followed by a slip-up 2-2 draw with Reims before bouncing back with a 3-1 win against Toulouse on matchday three.
Les Phocéens made it back-to-back league wins for the first time this season following a 2-0 victory against Nice last weekend. Neal Maupay [40’] bagged his first goal for the club after scoring the opener five minutes from halftime, before a Luis Henrique curler [53’] in the second half sealed the victory.
‘It's an almost perfect start to the season, yes,’ De Zerbi said after the win, which puts them in second place, two points behind table-topping Paris Saint-Germain. Buoyed by their impressive run of form [WDWW], De Zerbi’s side will make the trip to Lyon, hoping to extend their winning streak.
However, the visitors have won just 28% of their games against Lyon, their lowest percentage against an opponent they have faced more than five times in the top flight. Elye Wahi is expected to start in attack when De Zerbi lays out the 4—2—3—1. Meanwhile, Derek Cornelius, who was sent off in the 74th minute against Nice, is unavailable.
