Newcastle back in race for fifth-place finish as Brighton visits.
Newcastle United aims for a third consecutive victory to inch closer to fifth-placed Spurs, as they host Brighton at St. James' Park this Saturday.
Newcastle United
Newcastle moved one spot up the table into 6th place after picking up consecutive league victories [WWLWW] following last weekend’s 4-1 win over relegation-threatened Burnley. The Magpies are only four points adrift of 5th-placed Tottenham [60 points] with three games to spare.
Newcastle have 56 points [17W, 5D, & 13L] ahead of Saturday’s clash with Brighton, where they hope to pick up a third consecutive win, one that could see Newcastle move within one point of Spurs. Meanwhile, having failed to either win or score in their first four Premier League home games against Brighton [0W, 2D, 2L], Newcastle have won 2-1 and 4-1, respectively, in their last two against the Seagulls at St. James’ Park.
The Magpies could now pick up three consecutive home wins against the visitors when they host Brighton this weekend. A 4-4-2 formation with Barnes and Isak, who was shortlisted for the Premier League Young Player of the Season award, in attack is expected.
Isak, who is the third-highest goal scorer in the Premier League, having scored 20 goals, joins the list alongside seven others, including City’s Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, and Arsenal's Bukayo Saka, who has 16 goals for the Gunners this season.
Brighton & Hove Albion
Brighton are in 11th place on the Premier League table with 47 points [12W, 11D, & 12L]. They recently ended a six-game winless run [LDLLW] with a 1-0 win over top-four hopefuls Aston Villa last weekend.
A late goal from João Pedro [87’] turned what could have been a draw into a victory for the Seagulls at the Falmer Stadium. Finishing in the top half of the table would be a satisfactory outcome for Brighton, considering their dip in form in the second half of the season.
The visitors are just one point outside the top-ten ahead of Saturday’s clash with Newcastle. A win here would not only mean back-to-back Premier League victories for the Magpies but also a league double over Newcastle for the third time.
Roberto De Zerbi is likely to deploy a 4—2—3—1 formation with Danny Welbeck leading the attack. However, Brighton's squad is blighted by injuries, with as many as eleven players, including Pervis Estupiñán and Kaoru Mitoma, currently on the treatment table.
