Francesco Calzona calls for togetherness as Napoli take on Roma.
In a crucial clash at Stadio San Paolo, Napoli aims to end their winless streak and narrow the gap for a Europa League spot against a resilient Roma side looking to secure a league double and gain momentum ahead of their semi-final showdown.
Napoli
Napoli suffered a 1-0 loss to Empoli last time out, failing to find a reply to an early goal by Alberto Cerri, who scored within the first five minutes. The Blues sit in 8th place before Sunday’s game, hoping to end a two-game winless run, which leaves them with 49 points.
Napoli are nine points outside the top five with five games remaining. On Sunday, they will be keen to earn three points, which could see them leapfrog Lazio by goal difference, assuming the Eagles fail to pick up a point against Verona on Saturday.
The Partenopei haven’t lost any of their last five home matches against Roma in Serie A, with three wins and two draws. They could make it six without defeat at home, although they have conceded at least one goal in each of their last 12 league matches.
Francesco Calzona noted in Friday's pre-match press conference, "De Rossi’s management beyond the points leads them to score a lot; they have great physicality; they are strong on inactive balls; there are many things to worry about. But if we play as Napoli, we also have our weapons."
With six of the last seven goals in Serie A matches between these two sides coming after the 75th minute, fans could see a game of late goals on Sunday. Victor Osimhen and Matteo Politano will team up with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in attack for the weekend’s game.
Mario Rui and Amir Rrahmani are back in the squad after missing last weekend due to suspension.
Roma
Roma will be coming off the back of Thursday’s previously abandoned game, where they picked up a 2-1 win in the remaining twenty minutes of play. A stoppage-time goal from Bryan Cristante [90’+5] helped Roma secure victory after Evan Ndicka collapsed on the field due to a collapsed lung.
The win helped Roma return to winning ways after last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to fellow top-four hopefuls, Bologna. Sunday’s clash will serve as a litmus test for Roma ahead of Thursday’s semi-final first-leg clash against newly crowned Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.
Roma, who have 58 points [17W, 7D, 9L], will be looking to pick up a league double over Napoli, having won the reverse fixture 2-0. A 4-3-3 formation with Tammy Abraham, Stephan El Shaarawy, and Dybala is expected in attack for Roma, who will be without the suspended duo of Diego Llorente and Leandro Paredes.
