Napoli eager to end four-game winless streak as Bologna clash looms.
Napoli aim to end their four-game winless streak as they host top-four contenders Bologna at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Saturday.
Napoli
Napoli moved one spot up the table to 8th place after Monday night’s 1-1 draw with Udinese. A towering header from Victor Osimhen in the 51st minute, despite being sandwiched by two defenders, helped Napoli take the lead inside the hour mark. However, a stoppage-time goal from Isaac Success in the 92nd minute stopped Napoli from ending their three-game winless run (WDLDD).
Having failed to take advantage of Lazio’s draw against Monza, Napoli, with 51 points (13W, 12D, 10L), remain five points behind the Eagles (56 points), who sit in 7th place with three games to spare. European football of any kind would be sufficient for Napoli, who ceded the title to Inter two weeks ago.
Ending their four-game winless streak since defeating Monza on April 7, 4–2, is the objective when they face Bologna on Saturday. Since the 2013–14 season, Napoli have won eight of their nine home matches against Bologna in Serie A (8W, 0D, 1L). However, the Blues haven’t won any of their last four home Serie A games (0W, 3D, 1L).
Failure to earn three points against Bologna will leave Napoli with their longest winless run in the competition since a streak of six games between October 2019 and January 2020. A 4—3—3 formation with Matteo Politano, Victor Osimhen, and Jesper Lindstrøm in attack is expected for Saturday’s clash. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Giacomo Raspadori remain ruled out.
Bologna
Bologna are in 4th place with 64 points (17W, 13D, & 5L), having picked up consecutive draws following last weekend’s goalless draw against Torino. Despite five attempts, Bologna were only able to register one shot on target while having 54% possession.
The Rossoblù, who have one win sandwiched between back-to-back draws (DDWDD), will be keen to return to winning ways. They look to keep 5th-place Atalanta (60 points), who have played one game less, at bay.
After a goalless draw in the reverse fixture, Napoli and Bologna could draw both their meetings in a single Serie A season for the first time since 1979–80. A 4-1-4-1 formation with Joshua Zirkzee in attack is expected when Thiago Motta goes head-to-head with Francesco Calzona on Saturday.
Lewis Ferguson and Adama Soumaoro are both ruled out for the season.
