Milan begins title-chase in Serie A opener against Torino.

AC Milan kick off their Serie A campaign at the San Siro on August 17, taking on Torino under the guidance of new manager Paulo Fonseca, in what promises to be a litmus test for their title aspirations.

Milan

While city rivals and defending champions Inter take on Genoa, AC Milan will begin their Serie A campaign with a clash against Torino this Saturday.

The Rossoneri will be under the tutelage of new boss Paulo Fonseca, who slipped into the managerial seat on July 1 after the club parted ways with Stefano Pioli. After seeing the Serie A title go elsewhere in the last two seasons, Milan will be looking to challenge this term.

To do so, the club acquired centre-back Strahinja Pavlović from RB Leipzig for €18 million and Álvaro Morata for €13 million from Atletico Madrid. Emerson Royal also joined the club from Tottenham for €15 million.

An impressive pre-season outing, where Milan defeated the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Barcelona, has left onlookers and fans alike anticipating a more convincing title fight. Saturday’s clash with Torino will serve as a litmus test for the Rossoneri’s preparedness, especially having gone unbeaten in 28 games against the visitors in Serie A.

Furthermore, AC Milan have won their last four opening matchday fixtures. Victory against Il Toro will leave the host with five opening-day wins for the first time since 1996.

A 4-2-3-1 with Luka Jović in attack is expected for Saturday’s fixture. New arrival, Morata, is expected to come off the bench. Meanwhile, Marco Sportiello is ruled out for the weekend’s opener against Torino.

Torino

New boss Paolo Vanoli, who led Torino to a 2-0 win in the Coppa Italia first round against Cosenza, will be looking to steer his side to similar success when they travel to Milan. No doubt, the 52-year-old has been given the resources to make a mark.

Che Adams arrived from Southampton on a free transfer, while centre-back Saúl Coco joined the club after €7.5 million changed hands with UD Las Palmas. Meanwhile, this will be the third time the Bull takes on Milan on the first day of Serie A.

Both sides have a victory apiece, with Torino picking up a 2-1 win in September 1939 and Milan earning a 3-2 win in August 2016. After a comfortable victory in his first game in charge, Vanoli is not expected to make too many changes to the side that faced Serie B side Cosenza.

Antonio Sanabria and Duván Zapata are expected to lead the attack in his 3-5-2 formation against Milan. Perr Schuurs is the club’s only absentee.
