Fonseca closing in on Milan ahead of season's finale against Salernitana.

AC Milan, seeking redemption and a strong season finish, face already-relegated Salernitana at San Siro this Saturday, with farewells, future promises, and pride all on the line.

Milan

After a shock 3-1 loss to Torino last time out, Milan are looking to finish the season on a high note with a win over already-relegated Salernitana. Saturday’s season finale may be frowned upon as a dead rubber game, but it will present the perfect opportunity for Milan to return to winning ways.

Especially with Stefano Pioli expected to wave goodbye to the club following an underwhelming season that will see Milan finish in second place irrespective of this fixture’s outcome. Milan [LDDWL], with 74 points [22W, 8D, & 7L], are 19 points adrift of Serie A champions Inter and six points ahead of 3rd-placed Bologna and 4th-placed Juventus, both with 68 points, before this fixture.

The Rossoneri will head into their final game of the season without defeat in eight of nine games [5W, 3D, 1L] against Salernitana. However, following the defeat against Torino, the Rossoneri could lose back-to-back Serie A games for the first time since February 2023, when they went on a three-game losing streak.

Outgoing manager Stefano Pioli will be without Ruben Loftus-Cheek [knee injury] and Samuel Chukwueze for the final game of the season when he deploys the familiar 4—2—3—1 with outgoing forward Olivier Giroud in attack. Lille manager Paulo Fonseca, who steered Les Dogues to a 4th-place finish in Ligue 1, is expected to replace Stefano Pioli at the helm, with a verbal agreement said to have been reached.

Salernitana

Salernitana [LLLDL], who lost 2-1 to Verona on Monday night, will finish at the bottom of the table regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s finale at the San Siro. The already-relegated side are in 20th place with 16 points [2W, 10D, & 25L] and are hoping to bow out of Serie A with a victory, despite being on a 19-game winless run.

Stefano Colantuono’s side finished in 15th place last season, having returned to Serie A in 2021 following a 23-year absence. The 19-game winless run leaves the visitors without a win since the onset of the new calendar year. The last time Salernitana tasted victory was in a 1-0 win over Verona in December 2023.

They will be meeting Milan in Saturday’s clash while on a four-game winless away streak in Serie A [0W, 1D, 3L]. A 3—4—2—1 formation with Shon Weissman in attack is expected for this final-day showdown that has Toma Basic suspended.
