Manchester United take on Liverpool in battle of the Reds.

In a heated rivalry, Manchester United look to rebound from their recent defeat as they host a high-flying Liverpool, aiming for their third consecutive win, at Old Trafford this Sunday.

Manchester United

Manchester United failed to follow up their opening-day win with another, after a 2-1 defeat to Brighton last weekend. Danny Welbeck gave the Seagulls the lead in the 32nd minute, but Amad Diallo, who had missed a crucial chance to put the Red Devils in front earlier, eventually provided the equalizer in the 60th minute.

Deep inside stoppage time, ‘Player of the Match,’ João Pedro, ensured United failed to leave the AMEX with a point after scoring the winner for the Seagulls in the 95th minute. While a difficult fixture against Liverpool is up next, United are hoping to go into the international break with a win.

However, the Red Devils have won only one of their last 12 Premier League meetings against Liverpool. Joshua Zirkzee has made successive appearances off the bench for United but is expected to be given his maiden start in attack against Liverpool this Sunday, as Erik ten Hag deploys the 4-2-3-1 formation with Rasmus Højlund ruled out.

‘He returned on the [training] pitch, but it will take a while before he is up,’ Erik ten Hag said in an injury update ahead of Sunday’s clash. While left-back Luke Shaw remains unavailable, right-back Noussair Mazraoui will have the difficult task of keeping Luis Díaz at bay.

In other related news, Scott McTominay is no longer part of United’s squad, having completed a permanent move to Napoli.

Liverpool

Liverpool are one of the four sides with six points after back-to-back Premier League victories, which leaves the Reds in 4th place. A 2-0 win over Brentford last weekend left Arne Slot with a 100% record, thanks to goals from Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool are now looking to extend their winning run to three games in a row when they visit Old Trafford. An impressive record on the road against Manchester United has seen Liverpool suffer only one defeat in six games (2 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss).

Victory against Manchester United in Sunday’s battle of the Reds will leave Liverpool with three opening wins for the third time in club history, having last done so in the 2018/19 season. A 4-2-3-1 formation with Jota in attack is expected.

An attacking trio made up of Luis Díaz, Mohamed Salah, and Dominik Szoboszlai may be seen behind Jota. New addition Federico Chiesa could be involved in the weekend’s clash, having joined in on training immediately following his arrival.
