Manchester City to begin UCL campaign against Inter.
In a highly anticipated UEFA Champions League clash, Manchester City welcomes Inter Milan to the Etihad on Wednesday night, looking to extend their unbeaten run while Inter eyes a historic victory over another English giant.
Manchester City
One-time UEFA Champions League winners Manchester City will have their first taste of the competition's new look when they take on Inter in their maiden game of the UCL league phase. The Sky Blues are coming off a 2-1 comeback win over Brentford, thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland, who has been in scintillating form.
City would be hoping the Norwegian brings his domestic form to European soil when they face Inter Milan for their second-ever competitive fixture. Both sides last met in the 2023 UCL final in Istanbul, which saw City become champions for the very first time. It was a cagey affair, with City only able to get past Inter by a single goal courtesy of Rodri.
This Wednesday, the Sky Blues will be looking to not only pick up successive victories over Inter when both sides go head-to-head at the Etihad but also extend a 23-game unbeaten run in the UEFA Champions League [16W, 7D, 0L]. Wednesday’s clash will be the season’s biggest test yet, ahead of the top-of-the-table clash against fellow title rivals Arsenal on Sunday.
Pep is expected to deploy the familiar 3—4—2—1 with Erling Haaland in attack. Savinho came off in the closing stages of the 2-1 win over the Bees with what Pep has described as a cramp and remains in doubt for this fixture, while Phil Foden, who made a return to City’s bench at the weekend, is expected to play a part here. Nathan Aké is, however, ruled out of this fixture.
Inter
Inter Milan escaped defeat by the skin of their teeth at the weekend after Denzel Dumfries came to the rescue with a late goal in the 88th minute, helping Inter salvage a 1-1 draw against Monza. The draw left Inter with two victories sandwiched between draws (DWWD) in Serie A after they dropped one spot down the table.
Inzaghi’s side will be looking to rally quickly with Wednesday’s fixture against City looming. While Inter have lost three of their last 20 UEFA Champions League matches (11W, 6D, 3L), they are eager to join the list of clubs that have defeated five or more English teams in the competition, having already emerged victorious against Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool.
Inzaghi is expected to keep the weekend’s 3-5-2 formation in place, with the attacking duo of Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martínez. Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Nicolò Barella are expected back in the starting lineup after being benched against Monza.
