Lille back against Strasbourg after UCL defeat to Sporting.
As Lille seeks redemption from a streak of losses, they host Strasbourg at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, with both sides eager to change their fortunes in this intriguing clash between two eager-to-win teams.
LOSC Lille
Lille suffered four straight losses in all competitions, including a midweek 2-0 defeat in their opening Champions League game against Sporting CP. Bruno Génésio’s side was on track to earn at least a point until disaster struck; Angel Gomes was sent off two minutes after conceding a goal to striker Viktor Gyökeres.
‘I think that until the goal, we had a decent start,’ said Bruno Génésio. He pointed out that his team has not been dangerous enough in possession, acknowledging their struggles in the final third with back-to-back games without scoring.
The 58-year-old manager highlighted their issues, considering they recently lost 1-0 to newly promoted Saint-Étienne in the league. With that defeat, Lille sits in 8th place on the Ligue 1 table, tied on points with 7th-placed Stade Rennais.
Lille now turns their attention to the weekend's encounter against Strasbourg, aiming to rebound from recent setbacks. Although they have lost their last two league games, Génésio’s team has enjoyed dominance over Strasbourg, winning eight of the last 10 meetings in all competitions.
Nevertheless, another defeat could mark their first streak of five consecutive losses in all competitions since early 2003. Génésio is expected to use a 3—4—2—1 formation, featuring Jonathan David in attack.
Strasbourg
Strasbourg, on the other hand, are coming off the back of a 1-1 draw against Angers. Despite fielding the club's youngest starting lineup since the 1947/48 season, manager Liam Rosenior saw his side take the lead through Sebastian Nanasi just after the half-hour mark.
However, the failure to capitalise on several clear-cut chances proved costly, as Le Racing settled for one point after being pegged back in the second half. "I am very disappointed with our performance today," Rosenior said after the draw.
Strasbourg, who are currently in 10th place, just one point behind 9th-placed Le Havre, will travel to Lille this weekend hoping to return as happy travelers. The visitors will fancy their chances to grab maximum points against a Lille side that has lost two of their last four home league games.
However, the Alsace-based outfit have won just one of their last 11 away games in the league in 2024. A 3—4—1—2 formation is expected, with Diego Moreira and Emanuel Emegha leading the attack.
