Xabi Alonso faces former club as Liverpool hosts Leverkusen.
As Liverpool prepare to welcome Bayer Leverkusen to Anfield in a high-stakes UEFA Champions League showdown, Jurgen Klopp's rejuvenated Reds, under the tactical brilliance of Arne Slot, aim to extend their perfect run against Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen, who are keen to break their English hoodoo and spring a surprise.
Liverpool
One of just two teams in the revamped UEFA Champions League campaign with a perfect record, Liverpool sit second in the league phase standings, trailing only Aston Villa, who have a superior goal difference. The Reds are riding high under new manager Arne Slot, having won 13 of 15 games this season across all competitions, including a 2-1 comeback league win against Brighton last time out.
After falling behind early, a spirited second-half display saw Liverpool strike twice in quick succession, courtesy of Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah, lifting them to the top of the EPL table. 'It was the loudest crowd since I’ve been here,' Slot said after the win, praising the fans' impact. He added, ‘Let’s go now for Tuesday, where I think we need them again,’ ahead of their UCL home clash against Leverkusen.
With three consecutive Champions League victories, including a hard-fought 1-0 win over Leipzig on matchday three, Liverpool will look to keep their winning streak intact this Tuesday. Victory against Leverkusen will see the hosts record wins in their opening four matches of a UCL season for just the second time ever.
The Reds have enjoyed success against German sides, winning 10 of their last 13 European encounters against teams from the nation. Furthermore, Liverpool have won three of their four UCL meetings against Leverkusen. Slot is expected to retain Saturday’s 4-2-3-1 formation, with Darwin Núñez in attack.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Leverkusen are coming off last Friday’s tense goalless draw against Stuttgart. "We are unhappy. We thought we had done enough to win it," Xabi Alonso told reporters. "From Monday we focus on Liverpool. A big game to play in Anfield," Alonso added, as he prepares to face his old club.
Tuesday’s clash stirs up memories for Alonso, who was instrumental in Liverpool's legendary 2005 UCL final comeback win over AC Milan in Istanbul. He scored the third goal, helping the Reds overturn a three-goal deficit to eventually win the title on penalties.
The Spanish manager has led Leverkusen to two wins and a draw in the UCL this season, with the latter being a 1-1 draw against Brest in their last European outing. With seven points, Die Werkself are currently sixth on the UCL table, heading into Tuesday’s clash.
While the visitors will aim to get back to winning ways, they have only won one of their 11 away major European matches in England [1W, 3D, 7L]. Victor Boniface is expected in attack in a 3–4–2–1 formation.
