Lyon eyeing maiden back-to-back victories in trip to Lens.

In a high-stakes clash this Sunday evening at Stade Bollaert-Delelis, Lens aim to maintain their unbeaten start while Olympique Lyon look to secure consecutive wins in what promises to be a captivating Ligue 1 encounter.

Lens

Lens missed the chance to grab three straight opening wins just before the international break. However, they salvaged a hard-fought point in a 1-1 draw against Monaco, thanks to a stoppage-time penalty from Polish midfielder Przemysław Frankowski.

That result kept Lens unbeaten with two victories and a draw from their first three outings. Currently, they sit in 4th place on the table with 7 points, just 2 points behind Ligue 1 leaders PSG.

Lens have had recent success against Lyon, winning three of their last four Ligue 1 encounters. This is as many wins as they managed in their previous 25 top-flight meetings against Lyon in the 21st century.

Additionally, Lens are on a 19-game goal-scoring run in Ligue 1, scoring 28 goals in the process. This is the longest active run in the league, and they aim to match their best streak of the 21st century if they score against Lyon.

Manager Will Still is expected to deploy a 3—4—1—2 formation, with Wesley Saïd and Florian Sotoca leading the attack. Lens will be without Anass Zaroury due to a sprained ankle, while Jimmy Cabot and Neil El Aynaoui remain sidelined with knee injuries.

Olympique Lyonnais

Lyon, on the other hand, are desperate to build on their recent success after securing their first victory of the season in a thrilling 4-3 win over Strasbourg.

Despite trailing 3-1 with just half an hour left on the clock, a brace from Gift Orban (63’, 72’) and a goal from Ainsley Maitland-Niles (61’) completed a dramatic comeback, moving Lyon up to 14th in the standings. The victory ended a sequence of successive defeats.

Now, Lyon will be looking to pick up back-to-back victories. However, defensive frailties will be their major source of worry. The visitors have conceded eight goals in their first three Ligue 1 matches of the 2024/25 season.

This figure is only exceeded by Montpellier's tally of ten. OL haven’t conceded this many goals at this stage of a campaign since 1966/67, when they let in nine. Coach Pierre Sage would like to see his side improve defensively as he deploys a 3-5-2 formation.

Gift Orban will team up with Alexandre Lacazette, who returns to the starting lineup after serving his suspension, in attack. Sage will also be bolstered by the return of Ryan Cherki, who had been training separately amid transfer rumours.

‘There’s no need to reintegrate him; he’s always been part of the family here. We just had to get him back in the saddle,’ Sage said in a pre-match press conference.
