Paris Saint-Germain to begin title defence against Le Havre.
In the opening fixture of the Ligue 1 2024–25 season, Le Havre aim to disrupt Paris Saint-Germain's title defense ambitions as the two teams collide under the bright lights of Stade Océane on Friday evening.
Le Havre
Le Havre will have the luxury of kicking off the 2024–25 season when they face defending champions PSG on Friday in Ligue 1's maiden fixture. Having been at the deep end of a relegation scrap last season before finishing in 15th place, the Dean Club will be keen to get off to a flying start this term.
Despite a modest summer transfer window, Didier Digard led his side through an unbeaten pre-season tour. Yanis Zouaoui joined the club from Ligue 2 side FC Martigues on a free transfer, while Ismaïl Bouneb made the switch from Valenciennes FC U19.
Meanwhile, club friendlies against Fougères Football Club [7-0], now-relegated Clermont Foot [1-1], and Dutch side AZ Alkmaar [1-1] left Le Havre without a scratch. However, nothing can prepare the Dean Club for what awaits them when Les Parisiens begin their title defence on Friday.
Le Havre are currently on a seven-game winless run [0W, 1D, 6L] against PSG, last winning against the 12-time Ligue 1 title holders in October 1999 [3-1]. In addition, Le Havre are on a three-game losing home run against PSG.
Digard will be hoping to break the winless run when he leads his side out for his first competitive match with the club, following his appointment on July 1 after the departure of Luka Elsner, who traded places for Reims. He is expected to adopt a 4—2—3—1 with Josué Casimir in attack when Le Havre take on PSG.
Paris Saint Germain
Les Parisiens will be looking to adjust to life without Kylian Mbappe, their prized asset who has joined Madrid after his contract ended. The long-drawn transfer saga has finally come to a close, marking a new chapter for PSG.
Complicating matters, PSG had a less-than-impressive summer transfer window, notably pulling out of a deal to sign Nigeria's Victor Osimhen. While they've struggled to secure a big-name signing, they remain focused on initiating a convincing title defence.
PSG is eager to extend their 12-game unbeaten run on Match Day 1, as they face Le Havre. The team hasn’t lost an opening day match since August 2011, so Luis Enrique is likely feeling confident.
Although Achraf Hakimi returned to training on Tuesday, he remains a doubt for Friday’s clash. Enrique is anticipated to utilize a 4-3-3 formation, with Randal Kolo Muani spearheading the attack.
