Pimienta revisits old employers as Sevilla makes trip to Las Palmas.

Las Palmas, eager to improve on last season's close call, kick off their campaign against Sevilla, who also have a new manager and a revamped squad, in what promises to be an intriguing La Liga opener.

Las Palmas

Following promotion last season, Las Palmas remained in the top-flight after finishing in 16th place, setting up a second consecutive La Liga campaign.

The club has been busy in the summer transfer market, acquiring several new players including Oli McBurnie from Sheffield United and Scott McKenna from Nottingham Forest, both on free transfers.

Adnan Januzaj also joined on loan from this weekend's opponents, Sevilla, in addition to the signing of 22-year-old right-winger Marvin Park from Real Madrid.

New manager Luis Carrión, who took over the team in June, will be looking to make the most of these new acquisitions as Los Amarillos hope to finish higher up the table this term. However, Las Palmas are still struggling to adjust to life under the new gaffer, winning just one out of six pre-season games.

This pre-season record is unfortunately a sad reflection of last season’s poor form under the previous manager, which saw them fail to win any of their last 14 league games. Despite the unconvincing record, Carrión’s men will be looking to hit the ground running when they face Sevilla in their league opener.

Carrión could deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation, with new arrival Oli McBurnie in attack for Las Palmas.

Sevilla

Like the hosts, Sevilla will kick off the 2024-2025 season under a new manager, having parted ways with Quique Sánchez Flores following a disappointing 14th-place finish in the last campaign. García Pimienta, now in charge of Sevilla after departing Las Palmas following a mutual agreement, will take on his former club in his first competitive match as Sevilla’s boss.

He will be without last season's top scorer, Youssef En-Nesyri, who joined Fenerbahçe SK for €20 million. However, Sevilla strengthened their attack with the signing of Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidera Ejuke on free transfers, as well as Peque Fernández from Racing Santander for €4 million. Additionally, loan deals for Saúl Ñíguez from Atlético Madrid and Albert Sambi Lokonga from Arsenal were secured.

The record Europa League champions will be hoping their transfer activities pay off when they take on Las Palmas, as they aim to compete for European places this season. Sevilla have won each of their last seven league games against the hosts, a run they will be looking to extend in Friday’s encounter.

A 4-3-3 formation could be seen against Las Palmas, with Lucas Ariel Ocampos, Isaac Romero, and Chidera Ejuke in attack. Meanwhile, Saúl Ñíguez is unavailable due to suspension.
