Inter in search of maiden season win in Lecce clash.
Inter Milan look to kickstart their season with their first win as they host a struggling Lecce side at the San Siro this Saturday evening, following a dramatic draw in their league opener.
Inter
Inter Milan kicked off their title defence with a 2-2 draw against Genoa in the league opener last weekend. Simone Inzaghi's side overcame a one-goal deficit, taking the lead thanks to Marcus Thuram's brace.
However, they couldn't secure all three points after conceding a late penalty, which was initially saved but converted on the rebound by Junior Messias. This result places the Nerazzurri in seventh position as they prepare for Saturday's encounter with Lecce, eager to bounce back and secure maximum points.
Historically, Inter have demonstrated dominance against Lecce, winning 28 of their 32 Serie A meetings. They have handed Lecce the most defeats and scored the most goals, tallying 85 against the Salentini in the competition.
At home, Inter have won 17 of their 18 games against Lecce in Serie A, boasting 12 clean sheets and conceding just six goals. Despite being winless in their last three league games, they have rarely failed to win their opening two matches since the three-point win system was introduced.
Inzaghi is likely to stick with the familiar 3-5-2 formation, featuring Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram up front. Stefan de Vrij is ruled out due to a hamstring injury, while Tajon Buchanan remains doubtful for Saturday's fixture.
Lecce
Meanwhile, Lecce suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Atalanta in last weekend’s opening game. Goals from Marco Brescianini and Mateo Retegui, who was making his Serie A debut with Atalanta, were all it took to condemn the Salentini to the bottom of the table.
This weekend, Lecce will be looking to cause the biggest upset so far in the 2024-2025 campaign when they face Inter. However, Luca Gotti’s side are on a poor run of form in the league, having gone winless in their last six matches.
They have also failed to score in the last four games, marking their worst goal drought for over a year. A 4—2—3—1 formation is expected against Inter Milan, with Nikola Krstović in attack.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Kaba is sidelined with an ACL injury until mid-November.
