Inter in search of maiden season win in Lecce clash.
After starting their title defense with a thrilling 2-2 draw, Inter Milan are set to host Lecce at San Siro on Saturday, August 24, in a quest for their first season win.
Inter
Inter Milan kicked off their title defence with a disappointing 2-2 draw against Genoa in last weekend’s league opener. Simone Inzaghi's side overcame a one-goal deficit to take the lead thanks to Marcus Thuram's brace [30’, 82’].
However, the defending champions failed to secure all three points after conceding a late penalty, which was initially saved but converted on the rebound by Junior Messias [90+5’]. The result leaves the Nerazzurri in seventh place going into Saturday’s encounter with Lecce.
Inter Milan will now look to bounce back from matchday one’s setback in a bid to take maximum points. They have exhibited dominance in past meetings against Lecce, winning 28 out of their 32 encounters in Serie A.
Furthermore, the hosts have won 17 of their 18 home games against Lecce in Serie A, keeping 12 clean sheets and conceding only six goals. Inzaghi’s men are winless in their last three league games but have only failed to win any of their opening two games on three occasions since the introduction of three points for a win.
Inzaghi is expected to deploy the familiar 3-5-2 formation, with Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram up front. Stefan de Vrij is ruled out due to a hamstring injury, while Tajon Buchanan is in doubt for Saturday’s fixture.
Lecce
Meanwhile, Lecce suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Atalanta in last weekend’s opening game. Goals from Marco Brescianini (35', 66') and Mateo Retegui (45', 57' P.), who was making his Serie A debut with Atalanta, were all it took to condemn the Salentini to the bottom of the table.
This weekend, Lecce will be looking to cause the biggest upset so far in the 2024-2025 campaign when they face Inter. However, Luca Gotti’s side are on a poor run of form in the league, having gone winless in their last six matches.
They have also failed to score in the last four games, marking their worst goal drought in over a year. A 4—2—3—1 formation is expected against Inter Milan, with Nikola Krstović in attack. Meanwhile, Mohamed Kaba is sidelined with an ACL injury until mid-November.
