Napoli to begin Serie A season with Sunday’s opener against Verona.

Verona, under new management, kick off their Serie A season with a challenging opener against Antonio Conte's Napoli at Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi this Sunday at 17:30 [GMT+1].

Hellas Verona

Verona will begin their Serie A campaign with a clash against Napoli this Sunday. The Yellow and Blues will be under the tutelage of new boss Paolo Zanetti, who took over the managerial role on June 12 after the club parted ways with Marco Baroni.

A 13th-place finish, just three points above the relegation zone, saw Verona remain in the topflight after similar struggles last season. The acquisition of nine new players, including midfielder Suat Serdar from Hertha Berlin for €4.5 million and right-back Jackson Tchatchoua for €3 million from Belgian side Charleroi, is aimed at boosting Verona.

Meanwhile, the Yellow and Blues had an impressive preseason, playing five matches without defeat. However, they failed to replicate similar form in their first competitive match, losing 2-1 to Serie B side Cesena in the first round of the Coppa Italia last Saturday.

This could be a sign of things to come for Verona, especially as they prepare to take on Napoli, a side they have beaten just once in their last 14 Serie A encounters. In addition, this will be the fifth time both sides will be meeting on the opening day, with Verona winning just one of the previous four.

A 4—2—3—1 with Daniel Mosquera in attack is expected for Sunday’s fixture. Meanwhile, Juan Manuel Cruz is ruled out for the weekend’s opener against Napoli with a thigh injury.

Napoli

After failing to successfully defend the Serie A title they won in 2022–23, Napoli are back in the new season with a new manager yet again. The Blues endured a turbulent 2023–24 campaign, with three different managers slipping into the helm.

Former Tottenham boss Antonio Conte, whose managerial experience in Serie A with Juventus and Inter Milan is expected to count for something, took over the role on June 5. However, while pre-season went well for the most part, uncertainty continues to surround the future of star forward Victor Osimhen, who looks set to leave the club.

With the much-talked-about departure yet to take place, Napoli could find it difficult to turn their focus on Sunday’s opener. Despite the dilemma, victory here would leave Napoli with an eight-game winning run on Match Day 1, having won the last seven, a record streak for the Blues.

Giacomo Raspadori is expected to lead the attack in a 3—4—2—1 against Verona.
